Today we’d like to introduce you to Sheniqua Shanklin.
Sheniqua, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I grew up raised by a single mom on the Southside of Houston. She later remarried when I was about 13 and thats about the same time things took a turn. I was a rebellious teen that liked to do things my way (as teens do, no matter the consequence). At 14, I found myself pregnant and Truant meaning I skipped school more days than I attended.
Life at home was constant turmoil usually due to some idiotic idea that had been devised be or my step sister. But we did what teen girls do plot to party, thinking about boys and school was usually toward the bottom of the list. My parents helped me raise my son by keeping me responsible even though no matter how much church we were involved in and how much they fussed things still went South. So a few years, fights and juvenile detention centers later I had a run in with the Adult system. I came before a lady judge who gave me a 2nd chance. I was being convicted of parts trafficking and I was guilty of messing up other people’s lives with my mischief too.
She was lenient and offered me a misdemeanor theft charge instead of the 10 year sentence and felony conviction I deserved. That was a turning point. Now here I am a wife, a mom, a well-traveled Music Artist working on my craft and so much more.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Poverty. Thats a struggle that seems to drive people to do what they shouldn’t not for a quick buck. Very few people say I want to be a criminal when I grow up
EYDN – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I’ve mostly been known as a Support vocalist for years for many popular Gospel and Christian Artists. I’ve been a solo Artist before and quit but this go around im determined because im older. Music is a super duper competitive and over saturated industry. You have to be secure yet vulnerable, tell the truth and withhold. Being a mature artist is where its at.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I honestly don’t have a proudest moment. 2019 has been a year that I’m proud of my progress. I set out to fully commit and invest in myself as an Artist after I almost died during the birth of my youngest son.
