Meet Caroline Pavlinik of Bedtime Boss in The Heights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Pavlinik.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Caroline. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Four months after having my daughter and returning to my corporate role in sales and marketing, I could no longer function. I could not carry on conversation, sustain eye contact or feel enthusiastic about anything involving getting out of bed. Why? To put it simply, I was intolerably sleep deprived. The biggest blessing of my life had turned into my biggest curse, as my baby was waking multiple times throughout the night leaving me to operate on fumes.

When they say that smartphones hear our conversations, I believe it, because around this time a Facebook ad popped up for a baby sleep program. Never realizing that one could coach a baby to sleep, I eagerly typed in my credit card details and downloaded the program. What happened next was nothing short of a miracle. In under ten days, my daughter was sleeping soundly through the night and taking three naps a day. I was back to my usual eight contiguous hours per night of sleep, and I truly felt ready to conquer the world.

Over the course of the next several months, as I referred this program to any new parent grousing of sleep deprivation, I realized that I could create a viable business coaching parents to help their babies sleep better. While the thought of building a business from the ground up, and leaving my stable, corporate role (and salary), was extremely scary, it was also exciting. I was yearning to do something more meaningful with my day-to-day life, and knowing that I could help Moms who were in the same precarious position i was in just months prior was my motivation.

After 15 years in Corporate America, I resigned, and soon thereafter traveled to Sarasota, Florida where I became certified in the Sleep Sense method of sleep training. From there, with lots of late nights at my computer brainstorming, writing, and working with designers, my company, Bedtime Boss, was formed!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Building a business of this nature takes time. It’s just like establishing a career in any service industry – your business growth is fostered nearly 100% by referrals. I have to remind myself every single day of the old adage, “Rome was not built in a day.”

I have found, somewhat surprisingly, the business development process for Bedtime Boss is very similar to what I did in my former corporate role – connect with affiliates, seek warm introductions and provide excellent client service. This business, more than anything, is all about the “know, like and trust” factors. You have to have all three to be successful.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Bedtime Boss – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I joke that I am a combination sleep coach/performance coach/therapist because I can help your baby sleep through the night meanwhile saving your marriage, your job, and your sanity!

In all seriousness, I consult with parents virtually or in-home for a two week duration, during a time when the family will be at home, with no travel, no visitors or other major disruptions. This is essential to establish consistency and rhythm to the child’s sleeping schedule and environment.

I then create a custom sleep plan based on the child’s age, medical history and the family dynamic. I review the plan step-by-step with parents so they feel comfortable and confident implementing the strategy. Parents maintain a digital sleep log and we touch base daily to evaluate progress and make tweaks along the way. In most cases, children are sleeping through the night in three nights. Moms and Dads tell me that they are amazed at how quickly their little ones catch on, and how finally getting adequate sleep transforms their child into a happier little person (and them into happier big people)!

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
In a city with nearly 7 million people and growing, I think it’s safe to say that anything baby related is a smart bet. My goal over the next two years is to grow a team of sleep consultants throughout the Houston and Austin areas.
