Today we’d like to introduce you to Miriah Soliz.
As a native Houstonian, Miriah Soliz has an ongoing passion and commitment for working and representing her clients and their families. She shares the vision and aim of the Ammons Law Firm, LLC to “zealously pursue justice and compensation for the injuries sustained due to others’ negligence.” As the youngest female attorney at the Ammons Law Firm LLC Attorney Soliz has made substantial steps in fulfilling her dream of becoming a fierce advocate for those in need.
Let’s review her background. Attorney Soliz attended the University of Houston Honors College where she graduated with honors and received a bachelor’s degree in political science. Upon graduation, she received a prestigious scholarship to attend the Thurgood Marshall School of Law in Houston. It was at Thurgood Marshall School of Law where she was distinguished both in her academic pursuits and her extracurricular activities. She was a dedicated student who participated and excelled in competitive mock trial and client negotiation simulations. Additionally, during her law school student years, Attorney Soliz received the Negotiation and Leadership Certificate at Harvard University and served overseas as a law clerk for the Supreme Court of India. Her time with the Supreme Court awarded her the opportunity to develop and excel in her legal writing skills in criminal and civil law.
Miriah has had the distinct honor and privilege of working with many notable law firms while just a law full-time law student. During the rigor of full-time law school, she honed her skills litigating personal injury claims under competent and seasoned attorneys long before she received her admittance to the State Bar of Texas. Adding to a student resume’ full of accomplishments, Miriah gained extensive experience navigating the multiple stages of litigation. She excelled at planning every stage including discovery, drafting complex legal documents, leading depositions, and assisting in rigorous trial matters. She even cut her teeth empaneling jurors to successfully arguing against opposing party’s claims in front of the judge.
In her home life, Ms.Soliz’s favorite hobbies include traveling, hiking through scenic fields and spending vacations near the beach. Soliz also finds time to be involved in various state bar associations such as Houston Young Lawyers. Always the advocate for those in need, with Houston Young Lawyers, she often mentors underprivileged youth who are interested in joining the legal field and is also a member of the civil rights and social action group; Child Advocates. Child Advocates mobilizes court-appointed volunteers to break the vicious cycle of child abuse by speaking up for abused children. This year, her accomplishments include a feature in Houston’s Top Attorney’s Houstonia Magazine 2019 and a selective inclusion in the Texas Super Lawyers Rising Stars list 2020.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My path to becoming an attorney has had many struggles. Some of them include:
- Being the only attorney, ever, in the family/finding a job.
I do not have any other attorneys in my family so I didn’t have many connections I felt I may have needed to get a quick start. I reached out to a lot of attorneys to find a mentor and gain experience at firms. I knew I wanted to work in Houston, so I decided to go to law school here. I knew that I would have to network while in law school to make the important connections to my home base. Many students have connections to get into prestigious firms. I’d advise currents, that if you don’t have any connections, start making them yourself right away. - Finances
Financially it was difficult to get through law school since its expensive, so I had to maintain a job while enrolled full time in law school. My advice is to start saving as soon as possible for law school, so you won’t have to work. Working while enrolled in law school isn’t a good idea for your first year since grades are what make the curve unavoidable. - Time Management/Relationship upkeep
It’s hard when you are first in your family to go to law school because you will miss your old social life. You will no longer have time for your old friends to go out on weekends or see your family as much as you used to. My advice here, is to explain to them as best as you can that you will be busy and plan time to spend with them in advance.
Tell us about your business – what should we know?
I am a personal injury lawyer and I handled cases involving catastrophic injuries and product defects.
I am the youngest attorney at my firm and the only one from Thurgood Marshall School of Law. I am an attorney for the victims of the 2019 El Paso Shooting, the deadliest mass shooting this year and the third deadliest in Texas. I have litigated many trials and won my first large 3 million dollar verdict as soon as I passed the bar exam.
My creativity, determination, and ability to connect with clients sets me apart from typical lawyers. When I represent someone, I take their case personally and treat them like family. I see every chance I get to represent someone as a blessing where I can make a difference or change a life and I do not take them for granted. I truly believe in advocacy being the bedrock of who an attorney is. We speak for those who need a voice, with the language of the law.
Do you feel like there was something about the experiences you had growing up that played an outsized role in setting you up for success later in life?
Yes, I absolutely feel like my life experiences while growing up shaped my current successes. When I was a teen, my mother was in an abusive, unhealthy relationship with my now ex-stepdad that ultimately ended in divorce. I got to meet with the attorney who decided to help my mother for free and listen to him give her advice that I believe not only saved my life but shaped me for my future in wanting to become an attorney. These experiences made me who I am and instilled in me the zeal to think through situations with the mind of a litigator to help my clients rise above their hardship and be made whole again.
