Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney King.
Courtney, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in Portland, Oregon. I attended Pepperdine University in Malibu, California. I am a first-generation college grad. While I thought I was going to become an attorney one day, the Lord had other plans for me. After graduating in 2007, I worked in the legal field for a bit before coming to the realization that that profession wasn’t for me. During the housing crisis and crash in 2008, I decided to pivot and became an elementary school teacher. In 2010, my dad suggested that I get my real estate license and work to earn some extra cash since my teaching schedule was pretty flexible. I did exactly that and I started to follow in my dad’s footsteps by investing in real estate while helping my clients do the same. This is when I got the opportunity to purchase my first investment property which is the basis for my new book Millennial VS. Machine: How I got someone else to pay off my student loan debt and how you can do the same!
I dove into real estate full time in 2012 and haven’t stopped since. In 2017, my dad handed our family real estate brokerage, King Realty & Management Inc. over to me to run with it! Today, we help streamline and systematize the process of investing, buying, selling and leasing real estate in both the Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth markets.
With my new book Millennial VS. Machine, I teach fellow millennials about how they can use real estate to get someone else to pay of their student loans. This is what I did in 2013 and what I continue to do with my personal real estate portfolio.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Becoming the Broker/President of King Realty & Management Inc. hasn’t been smooth at all. To be honest, for many years I fought joining our family businesses. For some reason, I wanted to do my “own” thing; not realizing that beautiful opportunity that was in front of my face. Once it finally “clicked”, I have come to cherish and value the legacy that my dad has built and now take pride in continuing to grow it and empower others.
Some of the most challenging times have been learning how to properly handle the curve-balls that come my way as I help everyday buyers and sellers through their real estate transactions. Other challenges came with the natural growth into a leader of a company especially when my dad felt that I was ready to take over after him. Through lots of prayer, guidance from my dad and lots of reading, I was able to glean lots of valuable gems that help me in everyday business today!

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck. In the Bible, Psalm 139: 16 talks about how our days were already written before they took shape. I know who my author and finisher is and daily, I work to surrender to Him as I know God’s plans are good and will make me prosperous and give me a future and hope!
