Today we’d like to introduce you to Janelle Rendon.
Janelle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my blog in 2017 while I was working in Human Resources and about one month away from having my first baby. I had been wanting to create an online space to share bits and pieces of our lives and also to serve as a portfolio of my writing. I continued to blog through my maternity leave and returning to work for most of 2017. In October of that year, I became a stay-at-home-mom to our daughter Adeline.
Since then our family has grown and the blog has evolved. I rebranded earlier this year to JanelleRendon.com and haven’t looked back since!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The hardest part about blogging, for me, was starting. And honestly, waiting as long as I did to start is probably my biggest regret. I had it on my heart to start a blog years before I bit the bullet and made it happen.
I have learned so much in the last three years about having my own website, growing a brand and working with local businesses. I’ve done things wrong the first time and had to try again. I’m gone down paths only to find out that what I thought I wanted wasn’t truly what I was searching for. I’ve even chosen to change my blog’s name when it didn’t really seem to fit my content anymore. There has been a lot of pivoting in my journey so far, and I’m sure there will be plenty more in the days ahead.
The exciting part is, there is so much out there I still want to do and try and learn. And with this website and brand being all my own, I am in the driver seat and in charge of where I take it next!
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I strive for JanelleRendon.com to be a positive corner of the internet and to encourage without overwhelming. There are so many external and internal expectations of motherhood and womanhood in general. I want to help bring us all back to reality on what is truly realistic in our current stage of life.
My goal is to share what is bringing value, simplicity and joy in our daily lives. You won’t see me DIY’ing my entire house, outlining elaborate preschool craft projects or sharing fancy recipes on my blog. That is just not who God made me to be! More power to those who have those gifts!
You will see my favorite things I purchase on Amazon, affordable fashion and home finds, fun things to do/places to go with your kids, and hopefully some general inspiration and good vibes along the way. I also love to feature local Houston companies and brands!
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
I think the mentor/mentee relationship is one that can’t be pushed. If you are lucky enough to find someone you click with and that is open to sharing their expertise with you, don’t take them for granted!
