Meet Leah Jacobs of Soulcial Impact in Clear Lake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Jacobs.

Leah, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My siblings and I grew up watching our parents serve. My mom was an educator for over 30 years and my dad worked in oil and gas but held many volunteer capacities throughout the years and still does. After graduating college, I worked at a nonprofit so I was able to see the inner workings and what it takes to keep it afloat. Years later, I saw a need in my community and started my own nonprofit and I although it was not easy, I loved the start-up process. There is nothing like thinking of or seeing an idea on paper and seeing it fruition. In my time as a founder and working at a nonprofit, I learned that many nonprofits are strapped for resources especially the local ones.

People who work in that field are usually generalists, instead of specialists. Having to perform all duties as assigned including marketing, strategic planning, and everything in between. As time passed I had people reach out to me to ask about the process, who did the website, fliers and things of that nature. So I thought I would start a company to use my knowledge to help other founders with those tasks and Soulcial Impact was born. Originally called Conceive&Create, Soulcial Impact is a consultancy that helps nonprofits with marketing and strategy. Additionally, we work with nonprofit serving agencies like nonprofit development centers, the United Way and Food Banks to help their clients to put their best foot forward. Additionally, we are excited to be launching the Soulcial Impact podcast, a platform that will showcase nonprofits, philanthropy and social good founders of color.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a business is not an easy task, but I would say starting it is the easiest part. Maintaining it is another story. However, since I had experience starting a nonprofit I knew what to do and how to get things rolling.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Soulcial Impact – what should we know?
My business is called Soulcial Impact. It is a hub and resource for nonprofit founders, social impact enthusiasts, people interested in philanthropy and anyone who is interested. We provide consulting on design, marketing and strategy as well. I am proud of what I created because it is something that is truly a labor of love, I saw a problem and wanted to do something about it. In addition to the services we provide, a podcast that highlights nonprofits, philanthropy and social good will be launching soon. The podcast will focus on people and organizations of color.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I have the ability to truly get lost in my work. Once I get into a groove, I lose track of time. That lets me know this is something I love to do, it is my passion.
