Today we’d like to introduce you to Aja Washington.
Aja, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My artistic journey has been absolutely beautiful. Like a roller coaster my artistic journey has had so many highs within this past year. I’ve always had a passion for creative arts, whether it be drawing, painting dancing or fashion design! One of the most beautiful things about my artistic journey is that it has gifted me the freedom to express myself fiercely and unequivocally.
I will continue to dedicate myself to learning and giving back to others through my artistic gifts. To all of my fellow creators remember that you can rise up from anything. You can recreate yourself over and over again. Continue to find the beauty and positivity in your journey. “You are allowed to be both a masterpiece and a work in progress simultaneously”.
I cannot remember a time where I wasn’t creating! I’ve always loved art and artistic things. My family as a whole has been extremely supportive and influential in my art successes! They believed in me even during times in which I didn’t consider my artwork to be good enough! It’s always a blessing to have family and friends in your life who encourage you to pursue your passion and do what you love to do!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Challenges are the seeds in the garden of change which help to produce growth. I prefer to use the word challenge(s) because I feel as though struggle has a very negative connotation. Most of the challenges that I’ve faced in life I’ve been able to overcome! In saying that, last year I was challenged with comparing my artwork to that of my peers. In today’s society comparison is at an all-time high. It’s always that nagging feeling of “keeping up with the Jones’s”. Somewhere along my journey of overcoming that challenge, I realized that my artwork is special because it’s the essence of who I am. No one will ever be able to duplicate me without being considered a copycat! I realized that I am special, I am worthy and that my artwork is good enough to be shared worldwide. I think that it’s detrimental to life’s successes to know your worth and know that you’re deserving and that you’re a special gift to the world! I’ve learned to love my artwork and embrace my gift of art even more! The beauty of art is found in creative authenticity! “Remember that life is what you create. Continue to be bold, be beautiful and stand out!”
Please tell us more about your art.
Art of Aja encompasses who I am and who I aspire to be. Whenever I create a piece, I always have my audience in mind. I’ve always loved creating ever since I was a kid. I remember visiting my local Art Museum and being enamored by all of the beautiful works of art. However, I never remember seeing people in the works of art who looked like me. So now that I have the platform to influence and inspire others, I enjoy creating pieces that look like me and represent the people and things that I love and admire in life. I don’t want my art to be remembered as just a pretty picture. I want every person who encounters my artwork to be stricken with some form of emotion that then creates room for beautiful conversations. I think it’s important for artwork to give people something to both think and talk about! I created the Art of Aja brand with the intention of inspiring others to pursue their passion and do what they love. I’m all about originality, self-love, self-care, self-growth and blooming into your best self. Overall I’m really proud of myself for having the courage to share my art with the world! Art is my passion and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for this New Year!
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is obtaining happiness in a world full of sadness, sorrow and pain! Success is being the light to someone’s dark path. Success is feeling fulfilled by the joy of being blessed with another day of life. Success is making a difference in another person’s life. Success is loving yourself beyond measures, accepting and knowing that you are worthy of all things! Success is continuously finding ways to give back to others. Success is living life to the fullest and full filling your purpose! Success is found in being authentically you! Success is having peace in the midst of chaos. Success is finding your smile in the midst of a storm!
