Today we’d like to introduce you to Christina Rodriguez.
Christina, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The non-profit began as a passion project to bring awareness to the Latina Wage gap and expose Latins girls to STEM after school activities and then it became a 501 (C)3 to drive our efforts in implementing STEM after school programs in HISD, AISD and CISD. The plan is to have chapters all over the U.S. to change the depressing statistic of only 2% Latinas in STEM.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The work has just begun. The organization was founded in March of 2019. It’s important to help others in our community and to lift each other up in any way we can. We still have a lot of work to do. It’s never easy, but it is something I am very passionate about and thankful to be able to help bring this change to our Houston communities.
Please tell us about Pretty Smart Foundation.
Pretty Smart Foundation has begun to implement STEM After School Activities and host workshops for Latina women to learn technology skills and build their resumes while providing them with resources for technology jobs and technical training.
What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
The biggest barriers is talking about the Latina wage gap and how a Latina only earns .54 cents to a dollar compared to a non-white Hispanic woman. As women, we tend to feel like were not good enough or inadequate to our male colleagues when in reality we are just as capable.
