Meet Bryan Kung

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bryan Kung.

Bryan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My passion in photography started with a friend, a camera and a neighbor who was a war photojournalist from a long time ago. As I continued to grow as a photographer, I graduated from his home darkroom to the dark university room. Being self taught, I drew inspiration from everything and everyone because you never stop learning.

I’ve had the honor and opportunity to have a wide range of projects and the portfolio that comes with them. Some of my most serious projects cover photojournalistic pieces of anti-racism protests, the arrest of an energy company president, the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, and other newsworthy events, to name a few. In contrast, some of my most fun projects include commercial publications in New Orleans and Houston, portraits of senior executives, and fashion and beauty campaigns. I believe these experiences helped me develop my voice as a photographer and artist.

I’ll close by saying that even today, I still remain active and connected to the academic community. In order to keep growing, it’s important to appreciate the photography masters of the past and the contemporaries of today. Through this community, I gain inspiration and perspective to continue my journey, as someday, I hope to inspire others.

Has it been a smooth road?
I’d say I’ve been blessed with a relatively smooth road. I’m thankful for all the support from my family, friends, mentors, and peers. But everyone gets their equivalent of writer’s block, and I’ve had my fair share. The biggest challenge I have is an introspective one, “What is a good photograph?” In all of my work, I’m still trying to figure out the answer.

Please tell us about your work.
I’m an artist first and a photographer second. My camera is my tool, and my vision and creativity are what makes the photograph. Thus, I appreciate all forms of photography and do it all from weddings to commercials. What I’m known for, especially recently, is in my fashion and beauty photography.

My most proud moments are when my photographs help empower people’s passions. For example, when my photographs help launch a model’s career, or when my headshots are selected to represent senior executives, or when my portraits capture the perfect moment between bride and groom, father and newborn baby, or a soon to be a mom and her upcoming baby.

One thing that sets me apart from others is also one of the keys to my success. Preparation. I put in a lot of time before I meet my clients to consider a wide range of ideas, designs, perspectives, colors, and more to make the actual session fantastic. During the session, I love working with my clients to develop mood, emotion, and confidence that contribute to an even stronger product. And after the session, I invest an incredible number of hours perfecting the vision that my client and I set out to achieve.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most?
Houston is one of the most diverse cities ever, and it offers everything you could imagine.

What’s your favorite memory from childhood?
Too many. There was a time I was so excited to eat a pizza that I opened the box on the way out of the restaurant and it fell on the parking lot ground. Red tomato sauce was everywhere.
