Meet Nicholas Clough of Orbital Gas Systems in Energy Corridor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Clough.

Nicholas, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was raised in Northern California. Following enrollment at California State University at Hayward I decided to follow my instincts and move into a more artistic and creative environment. I graduated with honors from the Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Institute. I then worked in multiple kitchens, restaurants and hotels from San Francisco to New York. In 2005, I was able to open my first business at only 25 years of age. While my career in hospitality was thriving, it was not ultimately as satisfying as I had hoped.

An entrepreneurial spirit led me to different opportunities. Already a proven salesman with a successful and unique history in business development, marketing, project management, and team building. I began my career with CUI Global, Inc. (CUI) NASDAQ ticker: CUI, in 2010. I started in financial promotion and investor relations though my position quickly transitioned to a business development role. I joined CUI with a background in sales and marketing developed through entrepreneurial business efforts both on my own and with high net worth investors.

Once inside the company I quickly became involved in the development of CUI’s proprietary natural gas products. Realizing the great market potential and need for a strong and stable sales network, I began moving the products in a global direction prior to CUI’s acquisition of Orbital Gas Systems, Ltd. (Orbital). I was heavily involved in the acquisition, which was completed in 2013.

A focus on building an international product distribution network became the priority and as a result Orbital now has more than 40 representative and distribution partners globally. They focus on selling and servicing contracts for our GasPT® and VE Technologies®

Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth roads don’t result in success; my road has been rocky and for that I am always thankful.

Introducing new technology of any kind into any market is challenging, introducing new technology into the natural gas space is next to impossible. An industry that has typically operated with incredibly high profits is not keen to change or advance their ways of working. That being said, the need for constant improvement exists in all industries, and we have been quite successful in providing these improvements.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Orbital Gas Systems – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Orbital is a company providing solutions for natural gas system integration, metering, sampling and monitoring through its proprietary suite of products; GasPT for analysis, VE Technology for sampling and temperature analysis, IRIS RTU for telemetry, and BioMethane for clean injection of bio fuels into the grid.

GasPT is a proprietary way of measuring the calorific value of natural gas allowing the distributor to monitor at multiple locations in real time. This gives pipeline operators the ability to charge the customer at a far more accurate level; the result is fair billing for all.

VE Technology uses its helical strakes to eliminate vibration and wake frequencies for in-line sampling and temperature measurement.

IRIS remote telemetry allows the user to monitor their network from the comfort and convince of their home or office.

BioMethane is a turn key monitoring skid for farmers looking to sell green fuel without the headache of chromatography. Our systems do not require ongoing maintenance or calibration gases.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
For me, the warm weather is something I enjoy. While most people do not like the high temperatures it has been a welcome change from the UK. Orbital’s headquarters are located in Staffordshire, UK; I spent roughly 3 years living abroad working on sales and development there. And, while the countryside was beautiful to look at, the rain and cold we’re tough to handle.

The combination of distance and traffic make working in Houston a challenge.
