Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamesha Jordan.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Kamesha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
After I graduated from college, I got a job teaching English in Korea for a year. I came back to the states and had a pretty good job. Due to an error on my part, I got fired. I ended up working three minimum wage jobs to survive. I knew I wanted to go into the military due to the fact my mother and father had served. I enlisted in the United States Navy. I did six years and realized I had major depression. Once I got out of the military, I realized that I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I started working for a podcast company called The Sphere Podcast Studio as an Administrative Assistant. Since I have been here, my boss Garry Lee got me motivated to start my own business and pursue a passion. I became a co-host on a podcast called Vivid Vybe and enjoyed it. It helped me to get out of my comfort zone. However, my depression started creeping up again. I remember going to my aunt’s house and telling her I wanted more and hadn’t found my purpose. My aunt suggested I start my own podcast. I specifically asked about what? She said, why not do a podcast on being a veteran. After that, I started writing down topics that veteran’s deal with. The hardest part was finding a name. I toyed around with a few names, and The Melanated Veteran was born.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The biggest obstacle for me was myself. I did a lot of self-doubting and needing validation from other people.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
The name of my brand/podcast is The Melanated Veteran. I wanted it to be not just a podcast but a movement. The mission of The Melanated Veteran is to provide help and resources for black and brown Veterans. We strive to bring a better understanding of the sometimes overwhelming world of transitioning from military to civilian life. We believe in working together mainly through networking.
What were you like growing up?
Ever since I can remember, I have always been unique. My interests have always been out of the norm. Many would say I marched to the beat of my own drum. I attribute this to my parents. Being military brats, my brother and I were exposed to different cultures. We were encouraged to keep an open mind.
