Today we’d like to introduce you to Amberly Alexander.
Amberly, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I come from a family with a musical background. From the very beginning, my mom enrolled me in magnet schools to make sure that I had access to musical programs. In elementary, I started off playing the violin, but I then transitioned to playing hand bells. During this time, I also began to receive private piano lessons at the age of 6. The private lessons didn’t last too long, but I was able to read music, so I continued to teach myself at home. In middle school, I continued to play hand bells, joined the choir, and took piano classes there as well. I began to develop a real passion for music and not just playing it. I began to listen to various genres of music and different artists. When I got to high school, at the age of 15, a family friend, Eddie, decided to buy a drum set and taught himself how to play. He wanted to get a band together. Him on the drums, me on the piano, and my brother on the trumpet. Those were exciting times! Our R&B band became known as Epic Melody, and we played private gigs with some amazingly talented musicians and vocalists throughout some years.
After about a decade, Eddie and I teamed up to get into DJing. It was right up our alley. Between both of us, we have the knowledge and love for an extensive library of music. Learning to DJ was like learning a new instrument. We both put a lot into it. Thankfully, we have a close friend who has been a DJ for over a decade, DJ Johnny Mambo, who took us under his wing and helped us to take things to the next level. I became DJ Bronze, and Eddie became DJ Koolest Lateeno! We went from the live band Epic Melody to an all around event entertainment company called Epic Entertainment.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road as there has been a lot of time and effort put into developing my creative skill, self-educating, and learning more about how to conduct business. I’ve constantly challenged myself creatively and pursued my passions, dabbling in different creative fields. In addition to playing music, when I reached college, I went for Digital Communications, where I focused on Graphic Design and Photography. I didn’t finish my degree, but I continued teaching myself and finding freelance opportunities. Some would probably say to dial it back and focus on one thing, but I have come across a lot of people who have encouraged me to stick to all of my passions. All of the skills that I have developed over the years, I still use them to this very day, and I am constantly developing my crafts. At first, it was hard to balance all of my passions and to develop each one. It took time to get to the point that I am at today where I have the extensive knowledge needed and I can efficiently execute high quality services for my clients. Consistency, determination, and execution truly is key.
Please tell us about Epic Entertainment.
Epic Entertainment is an all around Event Entertainment Company that provides DJ Services, Professional Lighting, Emcees, Live Piano, and/or Drums, as well as Photography, and Videography services. I personally specialize in providing DJ Services, Live Piano, and Photography Services. When I DJ, I love reading the crowd and finding songs that will keep them on the dance floor. My partner and I aren’t afraid to jump on the dance floor from time to time, either! We love crowd interaction. As a company, I’m proud of how our skills, our vision, and our business has continued to advance over the years. Our clients are great about reassuring us of our skills, and we have even been approached by other up and coming DJ’s who want to take their services to the next level. That gives us so much confidence, and it’s a great feeling to see how far we’ve come! What sets us apart from other event entertainment companies is the knowledge we have of each vendor service needed to construct the perfect special occasion. We have become a one stop shop for Weddings, Anniversaries, Graduations, Corporate Events, Small parties, etc. We love being able to help our clients to create the event and the memories that they envision.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Some of my favorite memories from my childhood include making and playing music. When I started to compose music on the piano, I would have the best time imagining which artists I would write the lyrics and the melody to the lyrics for. One of my favorite artists was/is Alicia Keys, naturally lol. I wanted to be able to play the piano and sing just like her. So once I would finish creating the music on the piano and writing the lyrics, I would enact a live performance as if I was her. It was always fun having mini performances in my piano room!
Pricing:
- A lot of people don’t realize how much goes into providing services for their events. DJ’s put a lot of money and time into their equipment. Every time we transport our equipment, it’s a liability. We are usually the first one’s at the venue and the last to leave. Also, It takes time to download, cue, and edit thousands of songs. There are several of factors to consider and clients should have a reasonable budget for a quality DJ. Depending on the type of event, the number of hours, and the equipment needed, our DJ services can range from $400 to $1,500. We are willing to negotiate with our client’s and will provide a discount package for including more than one of the services that we offer.
