Today we’d like to introduce you to Joseph Rojas.
Joseph, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Originally from Southern California, I’ve always loved the film.” could we change the last part to I’ve always loved what film does for me. How people could create these huge immersive worlds, bring characters I’ve only imagined to life, and how for those few hours, nothing else mattered. Deep down, I knew that I wanted to be a filmmaker. However, for a long time, almost as long as I can remember, I was told to pursue something more stable or easier to achieve. No matter what I did, in the back of my head, something whispered film. After graduating high school, I spent the majority of college going after hallow pursuits. I finally leaped into my life. Still facing those fears of failure but with perseverance and a little luck I started going to school for film, met some amazing people and we formed Redefining Creation, before this, I was only able to get my filmmaker fix with YouTube having a small channel established IJustWatched, I started to learn some basics only fueling my filmmaker fire more so. Movies have always been my favorite way to escape from the hardships that I faced. They allowed me to become a cowboy, astronaut, hero, villain, and everything in between. Never being able to pick one, I want to act, direct, write, produce, and do whatever it takes to get us to the level of success I know we can achieve. I’ll grab the coffee and sweep the floor if need be.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When I was about seven years old, I was hospitalized for a little over two weeks after the doctors found a brain tumor that is benign and maintained with proper medication. After years of being told not to pursue film, once I decided to focus on what I knew I wanted and needed to do, the first week into film classes, I’m back in the hospital for another benign tumor located in my large intestines—having to recover physically and emotionally to jump back into the grind—using my youtube channel, freelance photography to continue to practice and grow my skills. After a year of saving money, I’m back in school, where I met the other three founders of Redefining Creations. I had a minor surgery two weeks before one of our first projects together. The fight and pushed through to make sure we had the best possible final product. Each time is overcoming the fear of failure, the fear that I’m not good enough, the fear that everyone was right when they told me I was foolish for pursuing my dream. Together they helped me grow my skills, understanding, and we treat each other like a family who is always striving and pushing each other to achieve more. I know that obstacles will always appear, but with a wonderful team and great people who push me to be better, I know I will make it.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the IJustWatched & Redefining Creations story.
I started on YouTube with movie reviews, using my phone, in a dark room, my first video was the leap into the deep end, and I’ve been swimming since. IJustWatched has helped me gain some basic skills and an extra outlet into filming and photography. Using that as the stepping stones or base of all the projects to come, with Redefining Creations we focus on our passion in films, however we have done multiple music videos, advertisements, concerts, and much more. We want to film everything we can get our hands-on, so we can create as much art as possible, reaching a multitude of people. Through main outlets, and testing our skill to better apply our knowledge in future projects to only continue to rise while expanding our creativity. We want to bring Hollywood to Houston, we want Redefining Creations the reason the film industry blows up here. We want people to see a Redefining Creations production and immediately connect with them. We’ve spent time learning and failing so we can move forward and establish our content in 2020.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I consider myself very lucky, although I’ve had my share of struggles and issues, I’ve also had beautiful moments throughout my life. My parents always tried to give me everything I needed or wanted. They don’t always understand why I’m willing to suffer and take the risk required to achieve success. Being first generation American, they would like me to go the route of a 9 to 5. Lucky, because I’m able to make that choice, risk it all for my passion, Lucky enough to meet wonderful people who understand how I see the world and help each other create those worlds, heroes, villains, and bring life to something that may change someone’s perspective. Movies always helped me escape the dark times, the times when nothing goes right, even if only for a couple of hours, and now I’m lucky enough to make movies and maybe if I’m lucky I’ll be able to help someone out there who is in need of a brief escape from reality and be immersed into another world.
