Meet Emery Mitchamore of Mitchamore Insurance Agency in Heights and Galleria

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emery Mitchamore.

Emery, before we jump into specific questions about the company, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I grew up in what was then a small town called Leander, TX. After High School, I received my Bachelor’s in Business Administration with a focus in Marketing from Texas State University-San Marcos, TX. After Graduation, I was recruited by a major Department Store chain to manage some of their locations in North Texas. During my time with this ‘Big Box Retailer’ I learned a great deal about managing people and myself. I will always carry the skills that I learned from managing large teams of people.

I got started in the insurance industry after the financial meltdown in 2008. I believed that the retail’ brick and mortar’ industry was dying, and I needed to look towards my future. Like many people, my 401k took a huge hit in 2008-2009. I decided that if I wanted to make that money back, I would need to work in the Financial Services sector. I got a job working as a Financial Adviser and started getting each of my state licenses. I worked hard to learn about the markets and how we can use them to develop and grow wealth. We had a lot of products that were new to the industry after the financial meltdown. After a brief time, I discovered that many financial devices that we were required to sell were not in the best interests of the client. The deeper I got into the products, the more I learned about the ones I liked. I then decided that insurance, specifically Property and Casualty Insurance, would allow me to help people without trying to convince them that they needed our products. Home, Auto, and Commercial Insurance are required to operate most aspects of life. I soon left the financial adviser role and started working for one of the largest insurance carriers in the State of Texas. The training I received from this quality company is something I cherish. After about a year and speaking to about 10,000 people, I found that I was really only able to help a small portion of the public and was competing against 1,000’s of other agents that could only sell the same products to the same prospects. That is when it hit me. If I open up an Independent Insurance Agency, I could help more people and provide the most comprehensive and honest discussion about insurance products possible. So, that is what I did. Opening an Independent Insurance Agency has been extremely difficult and extremely rewarding! I had to convince companies that we were a good agency and they should trust us to sell their insurance instruments to the public. We now represent more than 50 companies, many of whom are national carriers. Being independent has allowed me to help people fill gaps in their coverages, afford better coverage, and some make them legal to drive again. We do this because we like to help people, and what we know about the details of insurance has value. Maybe we can help you with your insurance needs?

Has it been a smooth road?
When you own your business, you will have money troubles. Either you will have cash flow shortages or make some bad decisions that will result in losses or costly mistakes. Every decision has an opportunity cost, some more costly than others. Changing from a Captive Insurance Agent to an Independent Insurance Agent had a multitude of challenges. From finding carriers to represent finding carriers that wanted our clients, none of it was easy. We still try our best to only sell quality products from noble insurance carriers.

Please tell us about the company.
My Agency Specializes in Property and Casualty Insurance Products. This is your Auto, Home, Business, and Life Insurance. I am proud of the time we spend to find the right fit for our clients. The longer you stay with our agency, the better we get to know you. Insurance agents are often forgotten about when life changes happen, resulting in gaps in coverage. Did your child turn 16? Did you open a second business location? Have you changed the leadership in your business and need new life insurance policies to protect your’ key employees’? What sets us apart is our independence, like our motto says ‘Our independence IS your advantage’. We don’t have a corporate office to up-charge for. We don’t maintain fancy offices or flashy buildings that you see downtown. Our goal is to keep costs down so that we can offer our clients the best rates in Texas.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the diversity of Houston! I love the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo! I love museums and culture centers! I love that on the same day you can visit the Piney Woods and then the warm Gulf Shores. Just like everyone else, I don’t enjoy the traffic.
