Meet Darlene Mendez of The Candle Mom in Sugar Land and Missouri City in the Farmers Market

Today we’d like to introduce you to Darlene Mendez.

Darlene, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
It started three years ago when I was pregnant with my son and decide to stay at home for the last two months of pregnancy. I start watching videos on YouTube about DIY. When I was watching videos, I saw How to create your candle, as soon as I saw it I said this is what I wanted to do as a hobby, but being pregnant stop me because of how strong fragrances are. I dedicate myself to read and find more information. After I gave birth to my son, I start trying to make the candles and get into this amazing candle Making world. After several months later and people telling me “Why you don’t sell your candles,” I decide to get into the online market on FB and everyone loved it. After that, I decided it was time to get into the Farmers Market, and again it turns out amazing. What it started as a hobby change my life completely, it help me not only to support my family in the basics, it helps me even paying my son speech therapy, it helps me with my anxiety and to connect with so many people, so many women that want to do something and are scared to take the risk. This is one of the best things that happened in my life.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, in this hobby you need to educate yourself, not only in reading, watching videos. You have to take classes for candle making beginners. I struggle finding what was the correct candle wick for the wax that I picked.

Please tell us about the business.
I think what it makes me different is the connection that i have with others. I like to tell my story, I am an open book so everyone know they can count on me. Another thing that makes me different is that I love to name my candles by my memories, or when a scent reminds me something or someone. I have a very wide variety of scents. I think my story set me apart from others.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love Houston and the Houston areas. Since I came to this city I had so many positive experiences bur what i love most is the support to the local farmers or local products. What like least maybe the flooding hahaha.
