Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Moreno.
Maria, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My name is Maria Moreno, and my parents brought me to this country when I was five years old. At an early age, we deal with many adversities. My mother forced to work two, even three jobs to support myself and my three brothers. We lived in Alief, and I completed all my schooling there. I graduated from high school. After high school I got married, and had two beautiful children. I worked many customer service jobs, front desk at a hotel, sales agent at a furniture store, and then leasing agent/manager after. I enjoyed leasing because I was able to help families find a place to live and call home. Eventually I decided to leave, and search for a job that allowed me to spend more time with my kids. I found a position in the school district which gave me more flexibility to work Mon- Friday, and was able to be a part of many of my kids school events. I enrolled in HCC, and took some courses. I didn’t have a clear idea yet of what exactly I wanted to do. I constantly had an excuse for not continuing my education. Then one day I saw a post about a Women Empowerment Event. I signed up to go along with some very motivated friends. I did some research on some of the panelist, and was intrigued by one in particular. She was a realtor, and had some similarities that I was able to relate to. It made me think of when I was a leasing agent, and how heartwarming it was to help families. I then decided to enroll into school, and within months I was able to get my license. I haven’t made a year yet, but I can honestly say that my journey has had many ups, and downs. I know that as a self motivated career we must be willing to put in effort, and remain consistent with our day to day operations. I’m still in the learning stages, but I’ve built a relationship with people whom I hope last a life time. My ultimate goal is to grow not only financially but to also educate the low income families about home buying. This dream of owning a home is possible for everyone, and not everyone is informed of how to start. I want to be the voice for my community and give hope to others who see home buying so far fetched.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. I have a full time job aside from real estate, and that alone takes up eight hours in my day. I’m not as active as I would like to be, as I juggle a job, a house, and two pre-teens who are active when it comes to extracurricular activities.
Please tell us about the business.
As a realtor with Walzel Properties, my ultimate goal is to assist families with the purchase or sell of their homes. I believe what sets me apart from everyone is my humble heart and cheerful personality. I always tend to make people smile and laugh. I try and inspire others to seek the talents within themselves. We are all unique in our way.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Optimism. I feel we must always remain positive and hopeful. If you fail at something today, that doesn’t mean you should stop trying. You should challenge yourself and try again as many times as needed.
