Meet Jaila Brown of Amourmyfoods in Cypress

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaila Brown.

Jaila, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my business back in high school when I was a sophomore & it’s been on ever since. I would prepare cake pops to sell to the students at school, and they loved them, so they demanded more. My cake pops is one of my number one hits. From the variety of flavors I make, no one would ever turn them down. My business took a turn when I was a senior in high school. I put it on pause so I could focus on my grades during my last year of school so I could graduate. Once I graduated, I was very hesitant on if I wanted to continue it since I took almost a year off away from it. Then I decided I never wanted to give up on something I knew I loved and I relaunched my business bigger and better. All my life, I knew I wanted to be a chef and run my own business, but I never knew what exactly I wanted to do whether it was cuisine or pastries. I decided I wanted to do both, and I enrolled at the Culinary Institute LeNotre in Houston, TX. They have two sides of the school here it’s either cuisine or basking and pastry. I picked cuisine first so I can go more in-depth and understand the real way chefs understand food. I graduated with my Associates in Culinary Arts back in May of 2017. I took the summer off and realized I wanted to go back for baking and pastry. Right when August hit, I was back enrolled in the school, very excited, and grateful that I was fortunate enough to be educated in the baking and pastry field also. I am still enrolled in the baking and pastry side currently doing my last term here, which is level 5. I came to the conclusion that I wanted my business to offer not only food or cakes and pastries bu both. Here at Amourmyfoods, you will have the best of both worlds.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I’ve had struggles being a chef. It mostly came from when I would take cake orders and other sweet treat orders while in school. I would take big orders to do and be so overwhelmed also while trying to get all of my classwork and homework done. It even had me question myself and ask myself is this something I want to do in life. But I glad I chose yes because this is my long life dream I’ve had since I was a kid.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
As stated before, I believe my specialty are my cake pops. They come in literally any flavor from carrot, red velvet cheesecake, birthday cake, salted caramel, and more. I am most proud of the hard work and dedication it took for this come to arise, so much work and money have been put into my business being the owner and the only worker. What sets me apart from others is that I offer more than just catering services. Amourmyfoods is just the name, but there’s so much more to it. Within my business, I also have a butter business. I make homemade compound butter spreads in different flavors or pretty much any meal. I also offer meal prep services to my customers, wedding cakes or regular cakes and more.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
My family has been one of my biggest supporters outside of my others. My family has been there for me day one from seeing me struggle to have to start over and get it right. I have had mess-ups during competitions I’ve done, and while crying, they’ve helped me get through it. My old high school has been another supper system, I believe I was the only student in the entire school who wanted to pursue a culinary career, and everyone knew me as chef jaila and my famous cake pops. My classmates were also one of the first few people to support me when I started my business. I even made ‘Amourmyfoods’ business shirts, and some of the students purchased shirts from me and would wear them on Friday’s when we had free dress outside of our uniform clothing.
