Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Smith.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Michelle. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started CrossFit 8 years ago! I initially started as a hobby and a way to stay in shape. I was instantly hooked! A few years later, I took my CrossFit Level 1 Trainer Course and began coaching. I started diving into nutrition around the same time and found a need for people to learn about nutrition and began nutrition coaching also. I had instantly found a passion for making people healthier.
Never in my life could I have imagined that one hour a day could impact someone’s life so greatly. I was watching people learn how to do more than lift a barbell. They were learning to change the course of their health through CrossFit and nutrition. I was on fire with excitement!
My best friend called me one day to tell me about a CrossFit gym that was up for sale. She asked me, “Are you the new owner?”. It turns out. I was not. That deal fell through but opened the doors for CrossFit MOTO. I was going to get the chance to build my own community. One that I believed in, full of people that have a love for life, fitness and fun.
I was just about to take my CrossFit Level 2 Trainer Course and had started looking for a location for CrossFit MOTO. Within a month, I found a place and started doing the build out. I opened the doors with zero members. Three months later, we have almost 30 members! And we are growing! I am excited to see how many lives will be changed within those gym walls!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am making all of the mistakes that a first time business owner can make! The ins and outs of the business side of a CrossFit gym have been my biggest challenge. 16 hour days are no joke, either! My day starts at 4:15, and I am not home till 8:30. Balancing home and the gym is a daily struggle. Everything works out the way it should. And you wake up and do it again!
Please tell us about your business.
We are a CrossFit gym. From the outside, all CrossFit gyms look the same. This is not entirely true. I truly believe that Food Is Medicine. Metabolic disease and obesity are killing our country. BUT, the great news is that these issues can be improved with a healthy diet and exercise! My focus, at CrossFit MOTO, is not how much a person can clean and jerk. I want to make sure that people live longer and have a better quality of life. If they get really strong and learn some new skills along the way, that is a bonus!
