Meet Asiana Arnold

Today we’d like to introduce you to Asiana Arnold.

Asiana, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have always wanted to be in the beauty industry. Growing up, I knew that the money I would make from being an attorney would be used to build my own beauty empire. I originally started out focused on doing lashes, but as time grew, I felt more passionate about doing hair. It has always come naturally, and it allows for a more personal connection with clients. I did not grow up in a time where natural hair was properly cared for and loved, so I taught myself a lot about natural hair and how to uplift it strand by strand. I later learned how to braid, and from there, life has opened my doors and sent me many clients to pass my knowledge and love to.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, but nothing worth fighting for, is it? Entrepreneurship is big in the African American community right now, so the competition is heavy. When clientele is low, you start to question yourself, but that is what it all about—perfecting your craft so that the clients come and stay your clients. With social media being such a big thing now, as someone who is not an influencer or already famous, the clients are truly earned through hard work and word of mouth.

Please tell us about your work.
I am a self-taught braider. I always had the technique, but it was not until two years ago that I wanted to take it seriously. My brand name is Beauty based on the beauty industry, and then I chose BLACKlash as a play on words for the lack of acceptance of African Americans in the beauty community. From the constant missed opportunities over hair to the lack of foundation shades, the backlash is crucial and hurtful to the self-esteem of many. Many comment on the name and ask questions, and their responses are always warming. It is an honor to be of my history and to merge honest aspects of our trials and tribulations into the beauty industry.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the endless opportunities and people. I’m from a small town where you pretty much know everyone, and it felt like my personality and aspirations would be minimized, so coming to one of the biggest cities allowed me to open up and become more free-spirited.
