Meet Tristan Green of Sterling & Co Photography in Outskirts

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tristan Green.

Tristan, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Hi, I’m Tristan Green, you’re probably wondering how I got here. Growing up, I’ve always had a thing for art and did a lot of painting and sketching all through high school. Before attending college, my dream was actually to be an illustrator for games and books. I realized that getting there wasn’t that easy, so I ended up completing a Dental Assistant certificate instead. While I was completing college, I started filming and photographing my friends and our little adventures to different festivals and parks. I had a small point & shoot Fuji-film that I had borrowed from one of my friends, it wasn’t the best, but it got the job done!

Eventually, I upgraded to a mirror-less Sony body and started taking it more seriously. I learned how to properly compose my portraits and from there, I started doing senior sessions of friends and family for more fun and practice. Eventually, I started charging people for these sessions. Shortly after I met my wife, Marjorie through Student Government at college, She started supporting me and pushing me from the start. I thank her for making me who I am today. She has helped me believe in myself and my work. Now she helps me keep tabs of sessions and even goes as far as managing my calendar and booking clients! We have been leaning towards becoming primarily a wedding business. We have done several weddings in a year for about four years. We both feel that one day we will be able to completely sustain ourselves with this wedding photography business. Our primary mission is to give our clients that “Mom & Pop” feel, to make the experience as comfortable and personal as possible, when they book with us. This past year, I have added a new member to our photography team, my good friend Josh, he has become my secondary photographer for a lot of my sessions and has been helping me push this little business to its highest heights.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The biggest internal struggle I have had is figuring out what my “style” is. I have always envied how other photographers color grades their images and set a tone, constantly, throughout their feed. I am always struggling with finding what I want within my own images. The real difficulty is finding a middle-ground between what my clients want and what I want. The root of the issue is that art is subjective, right? So what I like and what someone else likes could be vastly different. Ultimately, I have to do what I think is best. Otherwise, I won’t be as happy and inspired with the quality of my work. Something that has helped me is reaching out to these other photographers that inspire me and asking their opinion or what they do to resolve this same issue, as it seems it is a common one.

Sterling & Co Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We, here at Sterling & Co, are a small wedding photography group. Our business is comprised of myself, my wife, and my best friend. We are a close-knit group of creative minds. We specialize in wedding and portrait photography. We are most proud of the customer service we can provide to our clients. We strive to make our customers happy and comfortable during the session, making them open up and enjoy their session more.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think success is defined, for me, as being financially stable. I want that “American Dream”. The house, the wife, and the kids. I feel like once I get there, comfortably, I will be truly successful.
