Today we’d like to introduce you to Ted Tarver.
Texas CHL-LTC Training, LLC is a Concealed Handgun, License to Carry Training Company established to provide the training necessary to apply for and receive a state issued license to legally carry a firearm on one’s person.
Ted, a native of Sugar Land, is the founder of Texas CHL-LTC Training, LLC. Ted was an Aviation Ordnance Weapons Specialist and member of the US Navy’s 1st fighter squadron to attend “Top Gun” school for the F-14 Tomcat. His partner, David Kappus, is a retired Navy SEAL of 38 years.
David and Ted met at church one Sunday when Sugar Creek Church was celebrating Veterans Day and had a discussion about the Texas DPS Concealed Handgun – License to Carry Instructor course. They both had seen a need for high-quality training for those who wanted to safely and confidently carry a concealed handgun for protection, for themselves and their loved-ones. They decided to partner and develop a safe and thorough program, including the NRA Pistol Course and the Texas DPS Certified License to Carry Course.
While they offer classes to anyone who is qualified to take the course, they specialize in offering services to businesses and organizations. For example, they have a focus on Real Estate professionals, due to the security issue that agents must often meet individuals for the very first time at a vacant house. Another area they focus training on is churches and other social organizations.
They also offer non-firearm related solutions for those who prefer an alternative.
Bringing a focus on situational awareness and conflict avoidance is a key of their training.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Has it been a smooth road? Well, yes, for the most part. Every business has to expect the unexpected and other than the time for certain things to happen everything has gone very smoothly. As a 100% veteran-owned business, the state refunded our filing fees to incorporate. Truly an unexpected blessing in the beginning, during our startup phase and funds were tight. It gave us the opportunity to hold some classes for our active-duty service men and women at no charge, which we continue to do.
Please tell us about Texas CHL-LTC Training.
We want you to be safe and confident. The classes we offer teach both. We offer classes all across the Houston metro area and have made arrangements with several local ranges to conduct the shooting proficiency examinations. All our classes are conducted in accordance with the Texas DPS mandated requirements. The classroom portion is between 4 and 6 hours of instruction and then a live-fire shooting proficiency test.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I struggled with this question until it hit me, I would have started sooner, much sooner. The climate in our country and state is such that there is an opportunity today to start a business. I once heard, “Do something that you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” That may be a stretch, but the sentiment is right on!
