So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Mystic Merchant is an African centered spiritual supply store focused on connecting humanity back to our spiritual roots. We focus on Yourba, Hoodoo, Palomayombe, Voudoun, Santaria and so much more.
I started this business because I saw a need in my community. Many African American’s are turning away from traditional religion and are reaching and grasping for something more authentic. We’ve been told all our lives that anything African is negative and demonic and this simply isn’t true. Even in pagan and wiccan circles African spirituality is still very shunned and looked down on. I wanted to create a business that focuses mainly on African spiritual systems. Practices that were once thought to be taboo even in some esoteric spiritual circles are celebrated and passed on to younger generations. I established Mystic Merchant in 2017 and have been pressing forward ever since.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road by any means. I’ve struggled to keep my business afloat but I’m so passionate about what I do and the need is so great, my customers won’t let me stop. Do to covid19, I’m not able to vend at markets and events right now. However, I’m still accepting and shipping online orders. This is just another bump in the long road to success and I don’t plan on giving up.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Mystic Merchant – what should we know?
Mystic Merchant specializes in African spiritual supply for Ifa, Palomayombe, santaria, voudoun, hoodoo, etc. We’re best known for our unique selection of occult books and tarot decks. What sets us apart from other spiritual supply shops and botanica’s is our special attention paid to African spiritual systems both on the continent and in the diaspora. I have nothing against pagans or wiccans but you won’t find much of that stuff here. I want my customers to feel welcomed and proud of practicing their traditional spiritual system.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being the chronic procrastinator that I am, I find having a schedule and keeping to it as much as possible works best for me. Because I work for myself, I find setting deadlines helps to keep me on track when collaborating or working with other people. Time is precious and every second of the day is valuable. Mailing orders as soon as possible is a huge key to securing repeat buyers.
