Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Young.
Jasmine, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Having my own hair cut off is what got me interested in barbering in the first place. It was so hard finding a consistent barber who was professional but also took care of all of my hair needs. Barbering has been known to be such a male-dominated field. I figured I could introduce a different concept by adding a woman’s touch. Salons are normally way more structured so I wanted to incorporate that type of structure into my barbering career. I have been cutting hair for three years now in various barbershops. For my three years anniversary (3/6/2020) I decided to step out and start my own barbershop, Jas The Barberdoll, a complete men’s grooming experience.
Has it been a smooth road?
It means so much to me to be a woman who owns a barbershop in such a male-dominated field. It’s definitely not for the weak. As a woman in this industry, I have to constantly stay on top of my game and excel in my skills and services. I have to continuously prove myself because there are still some people who believe that barbers are supposed to be men only. This goes for customers and other barbers too. Of course, starting a business is a lot of work in itself, especially when you’re doing things alone. I wouldn’t trade it for the world though. I am now able to encourage and help other women in this industry succeed. COVID-19 has been a different obstacle especially since my business is so new. However, I’ve gotten so much support from my clients to let me know I’m not in this alone. It’s given me the opportunity to work on some things and add/perfect different services and products once I’m able to reopen for business.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Jas The Barberdoll Barbershop is a full-service barbershop specializing in men’s grooming. My services range from traditional haircuts and shaves to facials and eyebrow waxing. I aim to give men that sense of having a spa/self-care day that women get to experience in a salon. You can come in, grab a beer or drink, relax, while I do what needs to be done to have you looking and feeling your best and most confident. Aromatherapy is also incorporated into most of my services provided. I am appointment based so I aim to get you in and out in a reasonable time instead of waiting around for your turn all day. I service all ages from babies and up. I also have my own CBD beard oil, Cashmere Quill, that’s used on any beard services as well as available for sale online and at my shop.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I feel like Houston is a great city to start a barbershop. There’s so much opportunity here. I am not a Houston local. I’ve only been living here for two years, and already I have been able to open my own barbershop. So many opportunities have fallen into my lap since I’ve been here. The networking in Houston is endless. The culture is so diverse. I love this city so much.
