Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara Washington.
Tamara, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I worked in television news for ten years on the management side. So I understood the ins and outs of the business but also was a part of the day to day storytelling. My first television job was an Assignments Editor so finding stories and telling stories became my passion. It was moving up in the business that allowed me to see that everything was politics and it really put me in a position to walk away and start my own business.
So I created Boom Media and Image Consulting LLC. 11 years ago to work in my passion again, and that was telling stories. I also knew I didn’t want to work with a specific industry, I didn’t want to get bored. In news, you have to know a little about a lot and I really enjoyed being mixed into everything. I built my clientele based off of the relationships I made from working in television news.
My first client was a good friend, Chris Williams (AKA DJ Cruize Control), he was a Red Bull DJ. Red Bull engaged my services and had me consulting on the entertainment and sports side and from there, things just took off. Half of my business is on the professional sports side and the other half is a good mix of individuals, brands, corporations and non-profits. Everything has been based on relationships, it is the only way I have grown and survived. Relationships are about give and take and I do my best to always make sure I am giving.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I will tell anyone thinking about being an entrepreneur, know that it is a roller coaster ride. It is important to have mentors who are successful and can teach you what not to do. I didn’t have anyone starting out so it was a struggle.
Understanding the financial side of things, budgets, employees, contractors and even how to keep and gain business. It was all a learning experience. Asking questions and doing research is the bible for me.
It’s important to just be honest with people about what you can deliver and being okay with where you are in business. Also, it was important to build a community of other people in the PR & Marketing space and understand it’s not a competition and there is enough business for everyone. Last, I would add, understanding every client is not the client for you if you fail to understand that, you can really damage your name and brand.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Boom Media and Image Consulting LLC. – what should we know?

Our experienced professionals reach beyond traditional tactics to create innovative solutions in a multitude of areas including: Crisis Communications, Event Planning, Graphic Design, Image Consulting, Media Relations, Media Training, Press Releases/Press Kits, Public Affairs, Product Placement, Web Design, Writing, Social Media Marketing, Business and Lifestyle Management.
Boom Media and Image Consulting LLC. has professionals with over ten years of experience in the media and television business. We understand what the media is searching for, how to match clients with the right media outlet, and how each outlet reaches the consumer. With our broad network of contacts and a little creativity we give our clients an edge in getting the necessary attention to their products and services. Our goal is not to change the product, but to enhance the product to make sure it reaches the right consumer.
I am most proud of how we have grown with clients and how we have sustained. When seeing where a client started, when no one didn’t know them and now seeing them on national talk shows and network news, it’s an amazing feeling.
Because I worked in television news and understand the media side, I believe that has really set us apart from most PR firms. Most publicists only know the PR side and don’t truly understand the media side.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
You have to be a people person and truly love people. Being able to deal with different personalities and figuring out how to make everyone happy can be challenging, but that is the nature of this business. I truly love people and love talking to people. Being able to hear other peoples’ stories and also being responsible for telling someones’ story is the best job on the planet in my opinion.
