Meet Imani Meeks of Imani Chanel Artistry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Imani Meeks.

Imani, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Imani Meeks, and I am a 26-year-old Licensed Makeup Artist and Esthetician currently residing in Houston, Texas. I was born in Waterloo, IA, and although it is a small town, it’s played a huge role in my development as an artist. I’ve always had a love for makeup and a dream of working in the beauty industry. Growing up, I would always watch my Mom do her makeup, and I just thought it was the coolest thing! I remember writing her letters, begging her to let me wear makeup. So for me, this love and passion for beauty has always been there.

When I was eight years old, we moved from Iowa to Houston, where my love for beauty, art, and creating content grew. Whether it was recording YouTube videos, or painting portraits, I knew at an early age that my career path was going to be something creative. I initially decided I wanted to work with art in magazines, so I decided to go to Iowa State to be a part of their Graphic Design program. After a few semesters I decided that this wasn’t the path for me, and I moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to be closer to my Dad. I lived there for a total of five years, and in Milwaukee is where I really dove into my Makeup and becoming the artist I am today. I continued sharpening my skills and pushing myself as an artist, and eventually I started freelancing as a Makeup Artist around the city. I decided in 2017 that I wanted to further my studies, in this industry, and become an Esthetician. In my opinion, your skincare routine is just as important as your makeup routine, so it was important to me to be knowledgable about both. In 2018 I completed a program and received my Esthetics License. In 2019, I moved back to Houston where I’ve been for a little over a year, and I couldn’t be happier. There is so much to do in this city, and so many opportunities for growth and connections. I started Imani Chanel Artistry February 1, 2020, and I’m so proud of myself for it! I currently offer ‘Perfect Blend’ Makeup Applications and ‘How to Blend?’ Makeup Lessons, and new services will be coming soon! I have so much that I still want to learn and do with business, this is definitely only the beginning for Imani Chanel Artistry!

Has it been a smooth road?
Choosing to be an entrepreneur, and wanting to start a business, is never a smooth road! I’ve been blessed to have so much support from my friends and family, yet sometimes it’s your own self that can get in the way of your success. I am a perfectionist, and sometimes I can put too much pressure on myself. Pressure to be at a certain level or to be doing certain things. I often have to remind myself that things will happen for me when it’s MY time, and doing that helps things to be a lot smoother.

Tell us more about the business.
I started Imani Chanel Artistry on February 1, 2020. I am currently offering ‘Perfect Blend’ Makeup Applications and ‘How to Blend?’ Makeup Lessons. Whether you are celebrating a birthday, attending a wedding, or just feel like learning an everyday makeup look, I am there to make it happen. I’m currently a freelance artist, so as my client you have the luxury of me bringing my artistry to you! What sets me apart from other Makeup Artists is my passion for people, this industry, and my eagerness to learn! I’ve always loved makeup, but more importantly I love helping people to feel their best! I decided to get my Esthetics License, not only to be licensed to do makeup, but also so I can help people feel confident in their own skin. I’m always eager to learn new techniques and tips because this industry is always changing. So, I want to make sure that I’m providing my clients with the best! I push myself to be the best artist I can, and I’m excited to see what this journey has in store for me!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next decade I don’t believe the industry will really change, but that the things that are popular now will continue to grow! When it comes to makeup, I feel like the “no makeup” makeup look is in, and I think it will stay that way in the years to come. Permanent makeup has also really taken off, and I think it will continue to do so! Everyone wants to have that “I woke up like this” look, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.
