Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelbi Smith.
Shelbi, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I taught myself how to sew in high school and immediately fell in love with clothing as a tangible art form with endless possibilities. Once I graduated, I decided to pursue Fashion Design and while in college I worked at a bridal store and it was there that I fell in love with wedding gowns. It was a time right before Pinterest where all of the wedding gowns seemed to look the same, strapless and white, and I was desperate to make wedding gowns more fun and unique. After graduating I worked in Houston for a few years and then decided I wanted to start my own company and make wedding gowns in the Texas Hill Country. I now have a small office in downtown San Marcos where I showcase my own wedding gown designs and can sit with brides and design their own custom wedding gowns that showcase their style and personality.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome? Moving to the Hill Country has been a blessing because the wedding community here is thriving and so supportive. I have loved becoming a part of the wedding industry and being able to be a part of such a special day for a couple. Growing Moonlight and Moss was slow to start but over the last year it has really blossomed and I have had the opportunity to make a lot of really amazing custom gowns for brides that I am really proud of.
Moonlight and Moss – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am most proud of the custom gowns that I am have created. Each step of the process is completed by me and I take great care in pride in designing them. My favorite thing about creating custom gowns is that each gown represents the bride and her style so each one is a completely unique piece of art. I also love that brides know I find great joy in color and don’t shy away from it so some of the pieces that set Moonlight and Moss apart are the pink wedding gowns I have done or my new favorite color dove grey. The great thing for brides about working with a local designer is that you get to collaborate on all of the details that you want to incorporate into your dress and it can be tweaked along the way so that the dress is exactly what you dreamed of.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I designed a new collection of wedding gowns and my sweet friend Kayli with the Bloom Bar helped me throw a party at our office to celebrate and showcase the gowns through a fashion show. It was amazing because all of my favorite people came to support me and I was able to share all of my hard work with them.
