Today we’d like to introduce you to Erin Rose.
Erin, before we jump into specific questions about the company, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My name is Erin Rose. I am a Registered Interior Designer here in the state of Texas, and am currently located in the Memorial area of Houston. I grew up in Baytown, Texas with two amazing parents. My love for design really started young. Growing up my dad was always doing home projects, and I was always helping. I attended Stephen F. Austin State University for college, and like most 18 year olds, I wasn’t exactly sure what I wanted to major in. I took a few Interior Design classes because they seemed interesting, but decided to go into music education. After a few semesters, I realized I didn’t have the passion needed to be a great teacher, but I did have a passion for creating. I decided to give the Interior Design program another try and fell in love with it.
I graduated Magna Cum Laude from Stephen F. Austin in 2012 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Interior Design. I have been working in the Interior Design field since graduating, to which I am extremely lucky. The market was still not quite recovered from the 2008 fall by 2012, and I had a degree in a creative field. My first job out of college was an assistant interior designer job that paid $10 an hour. It sounds crazy but I loved that job. I got to work with the best mentor a new graduate could ask for, and by working at a small firm I learned so much I would not have otherwise. I am so grateful that I had parents to support me during this time, because it paved the way for where I am today.
I have worked in high end residential design, home staging, education design and work place design. With such a wide variety of experience I have come to have a very unique view of design. After almost four years in the industry I took my NCIDQ exam and full filled one of my first big goals I made when I graduated college by becoming a Registered Interior Designer. Over the years I really started to develop an interest in the human psychology and how interior spaces affect us. This idea is what has led the way to starting Rose Interiors; Design and Organization. I wanted to turn my passion and unique view into my full-time gig. High design and beauty are great, but I also believe in creating functional spaces and using holistic design that my clients will love. My favorite thing to say to clients is the reminder that this is their space and I want to make sure they love it. We spend the vast majority of our time indoors, but those spaces can have such an impact on us both physically and mentally. My goal is to create spaces that are functional, ergonomic, universally designed, while also promoting a healthy mental state for everyone.
I do still have a day job, but Rose Interiors; Design and Organization is up and running. The idea has been in my head for years, but I started taking real steps fall of this past year. I’m so excited to get my side hustle off the ground and eventually turn it into my full-time business. I could have never predicted what 2020 held, and while meeting with and gaining new clients is becoming more of an uphill battle that I ever thought, I am able to still be able to create interior design-based content. I’m posting bi-weekly blogs to the Rose Interiors; Design and Organization website, and am currently working on getting my YouTube channel going.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I am so grateful for so many things I’ve been able to learn and accomplish in my career, but it has not always been smooth sailing. Graduating college while the market was still recovering was rough. I was so lucky to find a job in my field of study. But even still it didn’t pay enough to live on my own. I am just glad to have supportive parents. It was a good three years until I moved over to another firm and was able to start standing on my own two feet.
One other notable struggle is frankly still happening. After 8 years of working for and learning from others, I finally worked up the courage and nerve to branch out and lay the foundation to start my own business. I started working on Rose Interiors; Design and Organization in the fall of 2019. That foundation building has been a lot of work, especially when still working a full-time job, and volunteering. Despite that I was starting to make connections with potential clients. However, the stay at home order and subsequent economic impact has had me shifting my plans and focus at the moment. While I’m still focused on working with clients in the Greater Houston Area, in the current climate I am building the lifestyle blog and social media platforms of my business. I’m also looking into how to do virtual appointments with clients, and even mini appointments.
Please tell us about the company.
My company’s name is Rose Interiors; Design and Organization. My company motto is Holistic Design = Peaceful Living. This is something I truly believe. Designing spaces that are holistic, and benefit the occupant psychologically is my true passion. One thing that sets my company apart is our Organizational services. I decided to have that in my list of services because the longer I’m in the Interior Design industry the more I have realized how much interior design and organization goes hand in hand. They really are one in the same because what is the point of having a beautiful space if it’s not functional? The thing I am most proud right now is just taking the leap and putting myself out there.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I think the biggest credit goes to my parents, Ken and Deanna Rose. They have been so supportive of absolutely everything I’ve done in life including some terrible tee-ball games in kindergarten. Additionally, I have some great friends who have been extremely supportive, and never complain when I bombard them with blog and Instagram posts. My first mentor out of school was Erika Barczak with By Design Interiors. She hired me as her assistant right out of college, and we worked together for a few years. She is extremely talented and was always so supportive in everything I have done. I learned so much from her, and while I have worked with some great people over the years Erika is still the person I think of when it comes to great mentors.
