Meet Dominique Silva of The Paperbag Project/Paperbag Productions in Westchase District

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dominique Silva.

Dominique, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My name is Dominique Silva and I am a designer/photographer and artist. I grew up in Washington DC and moved to the city of Houston to grow my artistry and business. The artist name I go by is Paperbag because the theme of my art is putting Paperbag’s over people’s faces to symbolize not judging a book by its cover and getting to know people further than the image that you see. I started painting and designing in Florida where I went to school. After having trouble with the photographer, I was working with, I taught myself how to do photography to better work with my clients that needed designs. Once I started doing everything on my own and gained more clientele, I started my own business providing visual services and creative looks to businesses and customers both locally and nationwide. Since then I have grown my business in creativity and art to the city of Houston. I’ve worked with various companies and brands such as Reebok, Forbes, McTrader, Bomberos, Buick, MissHoustonLatina, AT&T, Mister Carwash etc. I showcase my artwork in shows and galleries here in Houston in which many of my paintings and photos can be found. My inspiration and ideas for my art often come from my photography and vice versa. My time here in Houston has been amazing and I plan on staying here for a while. We are also currently in the process of getting our first non-profit organization off the ground here in Houston, targeting at-risk youth.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been an easy or a smooth road. It was very difficult finding a way to pay the bills in the field of creativity and arts but it was the obvious and only choice when it comes to doing what I love to do. After sticking to the knowledge that I learned in school and picked up over the years, I used what I learned to find my own lane and niche in digital art and design and how to profit from it. With the Coronavirus and quarantine, I’ve been spending a lot of time to myself and creating art from inside my home drawing inspiration from my girlfriend and other things around the house.

The Paperbag Project/Paperbag Productions – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
When it comes to my production I take photos, make designs from them, and push creative content. I make visuals creative and professional for our clients to then use for their branding or marketing. I specialize in model and commercial photography and designs. When it comes to painting, I strive to make art that makes people think in the most creative and visually appealing way while also staying true to my brand. The goal is to make images that are visually appealing and can grab and audience’s attention and also give people positive messages through the artwork. What sets my art apart is the paper bag concept over all of the people in the images.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The city of Houston is amazing. We are one of the best food cities in my opinion, our people are so nice, and there is always something to do. The thing I like least about our city is how hot it is.
