Today we’d like to introduce you to Trashena Collins and Tabitha Hamilton.
Trashena and Tabitha, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started TRC Customs in 2018. In the beginning it was just a hobby but it has grown to be my sole source of income. I taught myself how to create different things using a cricut machine and began selling them via Facebook and Instagram. On Dec 22nd, 2019 I partnered with Tabitha Hamilton and we created The Melanin Room. We take everyday items/gifts and personalize them. In just 3 months of merging together we have over 7,000 in sales and we owe that to our community and our customers. We love what we do and we love making our customers happy. This is just the beginning we have so much in store for The Melanin Room!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been a smooth road. In the beginning I was losing money because I wasn’t pricing properly. I made a lot of mistakes in the beginning but it was all a learning experience. When I partnered with Tabitha we lost money on a space we were renting. We have been through a few rough patches but we just learn, grow, and move on.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the The Melanin Room story. Tell us more about the business.
The Melanin room customizes tumblers, T-Shirts, Doormats, Canvases, Key Holders, Welcome Signs, decals and more! I am so proud that we were able to come together to create a business in our community and to show the youth that it is possible. What sets us apart is that we do more than just make orders, we also host classes to teach others what we do. We now have classes for kids to come and paint and just have a good time around their peers.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
We don’t believe in luck we just believe in hard work and life lessons.
