Kimberly’s path to success required significant sacrifice and perseverance. In early 2000, as the world entered a new millennium, Kimberly gave birth to a little girl who would change her world as she knew it. Her daughter, McKayla, was born with severe congenital heart disease. She then had to face an all too familiar decision: continue corporate work with more than half her salary going to in-home nursing care, or build a business that gave her to freedom to personally care for her precious child. Kimberly chose to fight the odds and nurture both her newborn and a new business. She jokes, “I built my business with a baby in one hand and a computer mouse in the other.”
Years later, through a circuitous path, Kimberly began Uplight Digital Marketing in 2017 and built a team of passionate individuals committed to helping small businesses build the revenues they need to grow. She says, “I am passionate about what we do because digital marketing is an ever-evolving field. Each day presents new challenges to keep us engaged and constantly learning.” We are so glad to announce that McKayla’s health is very good these days.
“It’s a whole lot easier to run a business with both hands,” she adds. But she wouldn’t trade a second of the one-handed phase either.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Kimberly appreciates that struggle is a part of the process. She understands and enjoys that the digital marketing world in one the evolves very quickly, so she stays on top of it by reading and continued course work. Nothing, however, can replace the knowledge of having been in business for so many years serving so many different types of businesses. What were you like growing up?
Kimberly was born a natural people person and connector. With a strong atmosphere of faith, she was very involved in her church and church activities at Spring Baptist Church for many years and cherishes those bonds today. Kimberly never met a stranger and has a true heart for listening and understand their individual walk of life. Even from a young age, most often, when you see Kimberly, she is a person spreading joy and cheer.
