Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberley Wells.
Kimberley, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’ve always had a knack for cooking! My culinary journey started in my early childhood, which is filled with unforgettable experiences. I believe that God gave me a gift and my mom helped cultivate this gift. My Aunt Phyllis has also been a great inspiration in my journey. I watched my mother get a joy out of cooking for her family and church. As I got older, I found myself following in her footsteps. I started baking and cooking a lot for family, friends and the church. In my spare time, I would look up and create recipes and prepare them. I would have family and friends try them out and give me their honest feedback. Because I love to feed people, I find it rewarding to watch people eat and enjoy my cooking.
In 2019, I took seriously ill and ended up losing my job. I became a little down and started to cook up things and that made me happy. My fiancé asked me one day, “Have you thought about owning your own restaurant?” My response was yes, I actually have. I began to tell him that it was my mother’s desire to open her own restaurant one day and I would like to honor her and her legacy and open one. By trade, I have over 18+ years of administration experience so I begin doing the admin work for putting everything together. However, I did not have a name. Insider: “Everything Chicken” was the original registered name, but that name didn’t settle with me; I kept trying to think of a good name, but came up with nothing. My fiancé, Jeff Holmes Sr. said to me, Babe, I got one! LOL! Jeff then spoke and said, “A Taste of Suga”! I immediately fell in love with the name. “Suga” was the nick name I called my mother. My mother lives in me through cooking. July 2019, A Taste of Suga was birthed as a way to honor my late mother’s, Sharon Maria Davis-Wells “Suga”, legacy and do what I love to do, cook! It is my desire to share my passion and craft with the world! Even though I went through trying times throughout the course of my life, cooking was one of the places I found happiness. That’s where the company slogan, “Cooking and Baking happiness”, was derived from.
After discovering one of my purposes in life, I enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program at Auguste Escoffier and will receive my Associates Degree in November 2020. I’m always looking for opportunities to invest in myself that I may bring professionalism, quality and exceptional great tasting food and service to the public.
Has it been a smooth road?
LOL! Smooth road?! As a start-up company, I have had ups and downs, highs and lows in the business, but remembering the reason I started and keeping GOD first has carried me and will continue to carry me through this journey. Entrepreneurship, working a full-time job in corporate, being a full-time mother, full time student and soon to be wife has its challenges but God gives me the strength each day to show up. Cooking is not a job for me, it’s my passion, it’s fun, it’s therapeutic, it’s my happy place and it’s what I love to do! So, not being able to work full-time for A Taste of Suga is a struggle. I believe and have faith that soon and in due time, I will be able to operate A Taste of Suga full time.
