Meet Shalita Bundage of Salons in the City in Missouri City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shalita Bundage.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Shalita. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
As a little girl I knew I had a passion for hair and fashion I would get my barbies and style their hair and cut them. It didn’t help that my mom was a seamstress Also went to school for doing hair so I was around it at a young age. So, by high school I was doing my friends hair and I knew I had a strong passion for it. Going to college and then ending up in Cosmetology school confirmed it. What really inspired me was my mom how she chased her dreams she designed clothes for Janet Dubois from Goodtimes so we followed my mom to La and met some awesome people. What that taught me was that sky was the limit I decided that I wanted to just dive right in. At this time i finished school within two years I saved my money and opened up my own Salon. It was a true sacrifice considering I had a family at this time. At this time but I was determined to achieve my goals. The first Salon being that I didn’t have a lot of experience in managing it didn’t go well.

So, I sat back and asked myself what could have I done different. Then it dawned on me you need to do something no one else is doing so I went to a class by Linda Dickerson in La and she Certified me in hair Replacement. This was something that not too many people were doing in Houston so I was flooded with Clientele also was in Upclose magazine which really put my name out there. During this time Business was so good it was time to expand. I knew I needed to expand and open up a bigger Salon but the fear of failing just terrified me .So I decided I need to have more security far as more revenue saved so I became an Cosmetology instructor with Ogle which I established beautiful relationships with my students that I now see flourish and are doing well in the industry. I didn’t know why God have me travel this path but I see now after teaching at Ogle and Paul Mitchell it brought me full circle and now that I opened Salons in the City 2016, I have several students working at my Salon now.

My mom really inspired me she was my biggest cheerleader she was able to see me take a leap of faith and open my Salon that I was so fearful of opened this go round. Then found out she had Cancer that was a blow so the hair replacement I had to really put that in place because my mom was devastated when she starting losing her hair so it really made me start customizing unit for her which made me start doing it for Cancer patients. So now 2020 Salons in the City has been open since 2016 and I customized unit for Cancer patience and people with Severe hair loss men and woman and children. I feel like this is my calling.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My mom getting cancer and trying to still run my salon.
