Meet Jan Hargrave of Jan Hargrave & Associates in Galleria

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jan Hargrave.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jan. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a body language expert. I analyze how a person moves his hands, his arms, his head, his legs, his feet, his eyes and then interpret what’s going on in his head. I specialize in deciphering deception during courtroom jury selection and witness preparation. My college graduate work involved detailed research concerning behavior of individuals and how much their nonverbal communication reveals about their inner beliefs and feelings.

While enrolled in a graduate psychology class, I became interested in body language when my entertaining professor kept stating that he could tell what we were thinking by the way we positioned our bodies while listening to his lectures. My interest in the subject spiked. After obtaining my Master’s Degree and lecturing at the college level, I was asked to write course curriculum for a class on nonverbal communication. During the class, I trained individuals on how to read the nonverbal gestures of honesty, deception, confidence, nervousness, defensiveness, dominance, disagreement, indecision, evaluation and skepticism.

As the course prospered and people’s interest spiked, various groups and corporate America Fortune 500 companies began engaged me to speak and teach these unique people-reading techniques to their associates. I combined teaching and speaking for several years, then formally began my consulting company in 1993.

I continue to inspire, motivate and teach this unique skill to groups throughout the United States and across the globe. My 5 books, “Let Me See Your Body Talk,” “Freeway of Love,” “Judge the Jury,” “Strictly Business Body Language,” and “Poker Face,” enlighten people and help them to analyze what other people are thinking through careful observation of their body language. I have shared my expertise concerning nonverbal communication, persuasion and influence with the New York Times, NBC News, ABC News, CBS News, Fox Television, the Steve Harvey Show, The Lifetime Channel, E-Entertainment Television and dozens of popular magazines such as Cosmopolitan, Glamor, People, InTouch Weekly, Us Weekly, The Forensic Examiner, Golf Magazine and others.

I have become the go-to-resource for analyzing key White House figures and Presidential and Vice-Presidential hopefuls since 1987. As a media guest, I relay information concerning the delicate details of the political figure’s leadership style, thought processes and decision-making abilities.

Besides being a Leadership Academy trainer for the Tony Robbins Institute, corporations such as Merrill Lynch, Starbucks, ChevronPhillips Chemical Company, ESPN, Chase Manhattan Bank, NASA, IBM, Blue Cross Blue Shield, MARS Chocolate, The Boeing Corporation, Johns Hopkins Space Telescope Institute, MD Anderson Cancer Center continue to employ me to acquire the “hidden messages” of those around us.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I suppose the most difficult struggle along the way was the decision to leaving my teaching profession to begin my own company. As an owner of a company, all retirement benefits, insurance, and hiring practices are now left up to the business owner. Once I took the step, though, I never looked back.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Dedication, hard work, perseverance, a sense of humor and a little bit of my Cajun zaniness.

Thank you for this nice article introducing me and my area of expertise to the people of Houston. It’s a great avenue for readers to further their interest in nonverbal communication and understand the importance of body language during conversations and negotiations. A smile, a nod, a head tilt, a chin rub; indicators of the “hidden thoughts” that are revealed through our actions. Actions DO Speak Louder Than Words!! Jan Hargrave
