Meet Kym Adams of The Business Team

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kym Adams.

The Business Team has traveled through two states, two cities and two names resting in Houston, TX the international business hub of the South. The Business Team began as a company named Personal Assistant, an outsourcing solely of secretarial services. What began with one person providing secretarial support for hospitals, movie production companies, conventioneers, hotel dwellers, non-profit agencies, all working on temporary long term assignments; got sidelined by three historic hurricanes, a relocation, and an extensive return back to the Corporate environment. However, in that relocation and professional reassessment, founder Kym Adams realized a more complete business support infrastructure for traveling Executives and project teams was needed, and how prevalent this problem was regardless of industry connection. After expanding in experiences and industry expertise, the company developed into a more holistic and complete business support service provider and resource and re-branded as The Business Team.

“Not operating as a staffing agency nor as a temporary employee placement firm, The Business Team now consists of 5 individuals, all expertly proficient in their subject area specialty. We now provide Administrative Support, Quality / Safety, IT / HelpDesk Support, Training / Translation, and Procurement Support. Each having at minimum 25 years of experience in their fields, our Specialists are able to provide more in-depth and complete support, understanding and avoiding the caveats of average business missteps. Our team has provided support to large corporations, small firms, and sometimes individual “solopreneurs” with equally successful results.”

The Business Team has developed a pricing and payment platform that suits the ebbs and tides of business influx called Time Blocks, which work for any budget no matter where you are in development. Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We thought Hurricane Harvey would be a setback, but it actually propelled us forward. We thought not having funding behind us would set us back, but it taught us to operate as a self-funded entity. We thought having our first government contract end would be a setback, but it gave us time to connect with more on a one-to-one level. We thought changing our name would hurt, but it launched us forward as a new memorable brand. We thought moving our headquarters from Katy would limit us, but we’re mobile to more areas. We thought obscurity would kill us, but it allowed us to grow organically and truly personalize our support. We thought COVID would stop us from functioning, but we’ve grown in multitude since it began.

It has not been a smooth road, but every obstacle has become a blessing.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about The Business Team – what should we know?
The Business Team is a local to Houston company with a national and international reach. We are a hybrid company combining the convenience of Virtual Assistant operations and support with the personal interface of an in-house staff. Our mobility allows us to work from our location or meet clients at their locations if needed. The personal interaction provides clients reassurance that once placed in our hands, their responsibilities will be expertly managed. This means in having no employees (temp, or otherwise) to supervise allows better flexibility in managing time and priorities without the distractions that doing business on the road brings with it.

Our areas of Specialty are: Administrative Support, Quality/Safety, IT Helpdesk, Procurement, Training/Translation.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I think the patience to hear the problems completely and expertise to concisely work through a sustainable solution in ways that the end user comprehends, vs just giving a solution that states an action without an explanation makes huge differences.

Clients want to know that they “get it” when you’re introducing new ideas and discussion points to their patterns of execution. If you bypass someone’s comprehension as unimportant, you’ve just excluded or eliminated a resource that was essential and made them feel expendable. Once a person feels they don’t matter, they either follow through and stop putting in effort, or they push back and resort to the old ways which made them essential again. (Flight or Fight)

Every person, from CEO to secretary is important and essential to a finely run organization. Make certain they know and feel that, and comprehend the rationale for every decision made that affects them.
