Meet Dierra Banks of Eyeconic Television

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dierra Banks.

Dierra, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
When I was about to graduate high school, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in media, any concentration. Once I got accepted to Sam Houston State University, I was told about the media program there and was excited to start. Along the way, I was blessed with multiple opportunities that helped push me closer to my destiny. I reported on Channel 7 News, worked as a production assistant, reported for Martin Rather, Dan Rather’s grandson for those who don’t know, and I interned. After graduating in 2019, I knew I couldn’t stop. I started working at the station afterwards. What really kept me going was getting chosen to work for a high time television company like BET Networks, which I never imagined would happen this early at the age of 23. I am blessed to be able to do what I love and I’m thankful to be blessed with such supportive parents.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t always been smooth. As an undergrad trying to come in, I had to learn how to cover hard stories in such a period of time. It was exhausting at first because some of the others had already mastered it, which made me feel like I was behind. Thankfully, I was able to overcome those stressful situations.

We’d love to hear more about your work.
I do report and production work, covering local and national news. I’m really proud that the people I work with are passionate and love what they do, which makes us go even harder. Many people love what we cover and it’s inspiring. In many situations, I like to always end on a positive note, which has helped me grow as a person.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was someone who always wanted to try something new. I liked to always have fun with whatever it was and made sure I kept that same mindset. I was interested in tv and certain shows, but I had not yet envisioned what I was doing today. I also liked food, different types from different cultures.
