Today we’d like to introduce you to Andrea James.
Andrea, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
So, I am what you would call an authorprenuer. I self-published my first book last May 2019 and have sold over 300 copies thus far. My book/guide is called The Stuff I Wish I’d Known. It is a guide on how to be successful through college while staying mentally and physically healthy. I had this idea my Junior year in college in 2011 because I finally was understanding the way that college worked and was in a good space about it. I struggled my first couple of years in college and had high stress and anxiety over grades and classes that I feel could have been either avoided or reduced if I just had a little insight on how college really was and what you could do to succeed quickly. The writing process took about six months and the self-publishing took about two months through Kindle Direct Publishing.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was definitely a challenge getting all of my ideas together into a format that I felt would be acceptable for a book. I also had to deal with a lot of self-doubt about whether anyone would even want to read my experiences and hear what I had to say. The other hurdle was self-publishing. It is an intimidating process, but I asked a couple people about their books and took it step by step until one day I was looking at a finished product.
The Stuff I Wish I’d Known – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
With my guide I speak to both students and parents about what to expect during their first couple of years in college. I have spoken with the Aggie Moms group and Texas A&M University three or four times and spoke to hundreds of teens at college expos. Along with smaller young adults’ groups.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I definitely would have just published the book earlier and started this journey sooner because it has been so rewarding.
