Meet Estefany Morales of The Kawaii Sweetshop in Southwest

Today we’d like to introduce you to Estefany Morales.

Estefany, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I has recently moved to Houston I didn’t know anyone and my kids were not in school. Yet, one day looking on the internet I saw a necklace that I thought was really cute and I got curious about how it was made. After some research I ended up in YouTube watching polymer clay and resin tutorials, my mom helped me get the basics to start crafting. It started as a hobby and I sold a few pieces here and there with the intention to get more money for more supplies until more and more people started requesting pieces and it made me feel like maybe this could be my job.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It took me a few years to find my target buyers, I had to be very consistent posting on social media and finding the time to make new items, take good pictures etc. which sometimes can be hard because I have two kids and they keep me pretty busy. It also took some time to find my style. Sometimes, I would make what I thought people wanted but I found that more success came when I started making things that I would buy, people found it more unique.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I make resin and laser cut acrylic accessories. Mostly earrings and purse charms/keychains and lately hair clips too, people know I love pastel colors and glitter and I incorporate that in my pieces, I also make my own molds for resin and cut all my acrylic pieces in my at home studio, I have a whole room dedicated to my business which I’m really proud of because I started on a dinner room in a one bedroom apartment. Sometimes people think that soft colors and glittery cute looking accessories are meant for little kids but I believe that no matter your age you can have a cute aesthetic. I like to try new things I used to work with polymer clay a lot until I felt in love with resin art, now I also work with acrylic which opens a whole new world of possibilities, I like to offer a variety of designs and I have something new in every release.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I want to try new things, my husband and I recently bought a wide format printed/cutter and I want to start offering different products like stickers and maybe apparel, I would also like to collaborate with other artists. Eventually I would like to get a bigger studio space and offer crafting classes.
