Today we’d like to introduce you to M’Lynn Koetting.
M’Lynn, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The scale read 245 pounds, but my drive to lose weight was not that number. It was the major concern for my health. While the usual routine doctor visits I had planned was normal, setting off the alarm on the blood pressure machine was not. My blood pressure was always high, but this time it was different and dangerous. It was a clear sign that something needed to be changed for good.
My relationship with food had always been me eating just for the fun of it, not for fulfillment. I ate when I was bored, and usually had mixed cravings, but I just never knew when to stop. I ate not when I felt satisfied, but when I felt stuffed. My activity level was somewhat below average in middle school and high school. I was in athletics, but the exercise was not geared for every individual’s goals or fitness. It was just weight lifting and running. Nothing really motivated me to push my limits, or that clicked to turn a switch. Plus, even my picky eating habits were not gonna help the fact that pounds would drop eventually soon in that time. That’s when I then realized food was not a hobby. I discovered that I can make choices and have flexibility in eating. I began eating healthier options of some of my favorite foods, then next added exercise. Exercise then soon became my favorite physical activity. It always seemed to lift up my mood everyday and my confidence, which kept me consistent.
Overtime, I developed routines that became habits. My drive and consistency helped me lose over 100 pounds, and ultimately help me find my passion for bodybuilding. The drive for the ultimate goal was not easy, but yet I still remembered my why, and that was because I wanted to compete in bikini bodybuilding shows. At the time, people sure did doubt me and my goals, but that’s what fueled my fire even more. I wanted this more than anything, and the only competition was myself. Every single day I reminded myself to be better than the person I was the day before. I would constantly journal and look up motivational Pinterest pins of all the reasons why I can, instead of why I can’t.
Finally, after all the countless meals that were tracked, the missed friend opportunities and events that would have triggered me to cheat on my goals was all worth it. Not only did I compete once in a show, but twice. The second time was ten times better, because I got the hang of it, and even missed prom to place first in my division. People then noticed my efforts, but it wasn’t other people’s opinions I wanted to win over. It was mine. My choices and achievements that would be made would only affect me and my body the rest of my life. My number one tip for anyone trying to find the inspiration that can help them is to do it for yourself because no one else will do it for you. The body that God gave you is the only one that you will be living with for the rest of your life, so treat it kindly and with respect.
Has it been a smooth road?
Wasn’t smooth, and took breaks. People would never take me seriously regarding my goals and the fact of how young I was.
