Today we’d like to introduce you to Coach Roxy.
Coach Roxy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’ve been in the music industry for over 30 years. I’ve been singing and writing songs and poetry as long as I can remember. More than anything it’s always been therapeutic for me. I was in my first band when I was 14 years old. Lead singer… performing with everything I had lol! I was in the first class of Houston’s HSPVA.
I spent many years in and out of town performing and opening shows for several well-known artists. I’ve worked with many of Houston’s local bands and musicians… I also found myself advising singers and helping create the shows. It was a natural instinct. After surgery on my throat and healing, I told a couple of vocalists that I was thinking about starting a business for vocal and performance training. Before I could organize it, I had four people signed up. I realized then that Coaching was my passion.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road but I knew that there would be obstacles and challenges. There wasn’t an outline for the specific kind of coaching I wanted to do. I can read and write music, but I wasn’t going to just focus on training the voice… I’m a Vocal and Performance Coach. I focus on the whole person. Nobody was doing that.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
As a vocal and performance coach, I offer vocal and stage development for students that sing all genres of music that are straight to the point, not to technical and without confusion for both private and small sessions. I work with ages 6 to adults and beginners to professionals. My coaching is specialized. Everybody is different. I consult with my students in the first session. We kind of get to know each other. I ask a lot of questions. I want to know what they want for me. They also ask questions of me. We set goals in the beginning. I know when my students aren’t focused enough or working hard to achieve the goals that we’ve set. No half stepping. I want them to do well. I care… And they know it.
My greatest strength is my ability to take concepts, information and ideas and put them into simple terms for my students. It’s one thing to have a great singing voice but learning to perform on stage and command attention to your performance requires an entirely different skill set. I’m in my own lane when it comes to coaching. My methods are a little unorthodoxed… but they work.
I’m an official vocal and performance coach for the Texas youth advocacy program, PPSH educational round table fine arts expert at Houston community college and Rice University. I was honored and recognized as one of Houston’s premier women by the new amazing 102.5 FM radio station. I’m also a mentor in my field for springboard south and amp u. I’ve been contacted by several artist management groups to coach their artist and create performances for them. I create shows, write music, and coach in the recording studio.
My students have performed in major musicals, commercials and have opened for major artists in concerts. I work with numerous recording artists and my students have made it to the top 10 American idols, Making the Band auditions in Houston and Houston’s artists selected for dancing in the streets Motown and more review etc. We work hard. The kids that I coach are also doing outstanding things.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
I am especially proud when my students get it. I mean, they understand what I’m trying to teach them. They’ve accomplished some of the things that they’ve been struggling to do. They’re more confident. I means a lot to me to see that I coach, they get it and their goals are met.
