Today we’d like to introduce you to John Martin.
Hi John, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
After deciding to go back to school for my MBA, I took a course on entrepreneurship. Learning from my professor in that class, I felt more interested and drawn to one day, opening a business of my own. Starting my drone business gave me the space to show my creativity through pictures and videos. After studying more in the drone industry, I was able to get my Part 107 license and start my business.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The process has been more challenging than I expected. After buying the drone itself, I slowly found out it took a lot more than just a drone to run a successful drone business. I believe there is a need for work with drones, but it’s been a little tough to gain consistent business from people/companies. With having a full time job and a family, consistency has been something I’m working to be better with when it comes to my craft. My goal would be eventually to work with some companies that can see the importance of having a drone in parts of their business.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Currently, I have a full-time job in telecommunications, where I manage a sales team. I’ve been in multiple different sales environments and excelled in most of them. I love the idea of showing customers a need and giving them a chance to make a decision based on what I’ve presented. I’m most proud of my family, which is my wife and son. The individual thing that I’m most proud of is getting my BBA in Marketing and MBA. What sets me apart is that I’m willing to learn more than anyone else. No matter how much I learn, I feel that learning only helps you grow and become well versed in many different areas of life. My goal would be to show my son how to get out and work hard for everything and never give up on your goals. My favorite thing to do is to be a father and husband. My family is so important to me and they are my motivation.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs, or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I listen to a lot of podcasts, and I am a part of a podcast myself. My friends and I started a podcast called The Black Dadcast and it has been a blessing to give people a true voice from some Black Fathers that are married and living in the home with spouses and children. I also love to read jauntilyjaided.com blogs because she’s inspiring to young women in this world.
