Today we’d like to introduce you to Derek Clarke
Hi Derek, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I’ve been an artist my whole life. It’s been a passion of mine since I was in grade school. I love the freedom of it. I picked up painting roughly ten years ago. But only seriously started painting as a career this year.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not. I went to art school twice but did not achieve a degree due to life events. Landing a job in the art world never came about, so I began freelancing as a graphic designer. I found success as a freelancer, but having to design to clients’ guidelines always bothered me. However, that helped me realize that I actually don’t want to turn my art into a job with clients, deadlines, restrictions, etc. so once I discovered painting, this is where I’ve found peace with my art.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a painter, more specifically, an abstract expressionist. I use many techniques in my work, with bold and vibrant colors. I recently learned that I have synesthesia, which is when you see colors from sounds. I unknowingly was using this in my work, seeing as how I try to convey the sounds of a song into an abstract moment of color. I love music, all types. So I approach each new piece of mine as if it’s my own song.
We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
I wouldn’t say I’ve learned any more than the average person. But I have noticed just how heavily art relies on in-person viewership. I’ve been to one art fair that was low on attendance. And I had to skip the Houston festival because my household needed to quarantine once my daughter was exposed. Thankfully we are all fine and tested negative, but just another example of how Covid has interfered with my art display.
