Meet Kyle Henderson of JellyFlea Creative in Kingwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Henderson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kyle. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
In 2005, I was working full time as a professional skydiver in Chicago and discovered the weekdays had a lot of downtime. To pass the time I designed a couple websites as pet projects, word got around, and I started making websites for family and friends.

About a year later, I moved to Houston, still working full time in skydiving, where I picked up more web design clients. In 2007, with the support of my wife, I took my web design business full time and built it to become one of Houston’s top web design firms.

At the beginning of my company, I focused on custom solutions for clients outside of content management systems and WYSIWYG. However over the past five or so years, WordPress has evolved into a truly versatile platform. The ease of maintenance by the client cinched the deal and I made the move to focusing on custom solutions within WordPress.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The most significant struggle is keeping up with the fast-paced changes of technology. At first I focused on building websites from scratch, but as WordPress matured into a full web development platform, I embraced an entirely different approach. The evolution of mobile-friendly websites and web-based apps have also been a huge change in the last few years, and is continually evolving. Keeping current with the latest technologies is a huge investment in time, but we pride ourselves on providing modern solutions for our clients and keeping them informed with the latest trends.

Please tell us about JellyFlea Creative.
JellyFlea specializes in custom WordPress websites, typically for small to medium-sized businesses. Most of our clients are in Houston, but we have clients all over the USA. We focus on long-term relationships with our clients and continue to serve them for years. We also offer many other services that support web design such as logo design, graphic design, web hosting, email hosting, SEO, social media, and online marketing.

We really listen to our clients, get to know their business, and end up doing quite a bit of consulting and education to make sure they are making the best decisions for their online presence.

The main thing that sets us apart is our long history of custom web design and development and consultation. The web design landscape is littered with DIY tools, as well as companies that are little more than a front for offshore development where you’ll never speak with the designer, won’t be able to get back in touch with them after the website launches. It’s rare that either of those solutions work out well, and we’ve had many customers come to us after a bad experience and are shocked at how much better the experience is with us. I just wish they had come to us first!

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Besides using pre-existing tools like Zoho Books and GSuite to handle the business side of things, the main thing I would have done from the beginning would be to bill on a project basis rather than an hourly rate. After meeting many clients over the years I found they much prefer package prices so they can plan a budget and get a turn-key solution with no surprises.
