Meet Desiree Howard

Today we’d like to introduce you to Desiree Howard

Hi Desiree, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started cutting hair in 2013. Cutting hair has always been my passion. I went to Texas Southern University, where I graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor’s Degree, and a Master’s Degree in 2012.I remember working a 9 to 5 job, and not being happy because I wasn’t able to focus on anything other than my dreams. I was always taught to go to school, get a degree, and a good job, so when I started barber school in 2013, I kept It a secret from my parents. After facing many setbacks, I finally became a licensed barber last year. Working for myself is the best decision I’ve made.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road was not smooth at all. I started barber school in 2013, and became a licensed barber in 2020.Someone on the outside looking in would probably wonder why it took so long to finish a 9 month program. I faced many setbacks, such as losing my job, having financial issues, and losing everything I owned due to Hurricane Harvey. I wasn’t able to finish school during those stressful times. After Hurricane Harvey, I took a year off to recover. I was finally able to get back into school, and I finally became a licensed barber. If you want to know what your passion is in life, it is whatever you won’t stop fighting for.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am A licensed barber, and I also specialize in hair replacements. This is for anyone who suffers from hair loss due to genetics, or any type of illness that would cause hair loss. I am proud of how hard I work, and how much I’ve grown in this profession in such a short period of time. I still have a long way to go though. I think my work ethic sets me apart. I am a hard worker. I study videos every day before I go to sleep. I also reach out to successful barbers for advice on how to get better. I want to be the best barber ever.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory was when I picked up a pair of my dad clippers at 10 years old and gave my little cousin his first haircut. He wore a bald cut for years and years after that.
