Conversations with Abenezer Yonas

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abenezer Yonas.

Hi Abenezer, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I had always been a good writer, but never knew what field I wanted to write in. I’ve loved music as long as I remember, but it wasn’t until that fateful day in April that I realized music was my true calling. I was free-styling in front of my friend, when he turns around and says, “yo bro that songs fire, what’s it called?” I told him that it wasn’t a song, and just some random stuff I was free-styling. He encouraged me to start making music and ever since that day, that’s all I’ve been doing.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. As an artist still on the come up, there are a lot of things I struggle with. Seeing fellow artist in my city doing numbers while I’m still trying to push out content is a little nerve wracking at times, leading me to question myself at times. One thing I’ve severely struggled with is patience. Because I had and have the talent necessary to blow up, I thought it would come easy. I had to learn the hard-way that even though I’m special, at the end of the day, I’m just another artist who can make a song.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a singer, rapper and songwriter. I’m known for my raspy, yet enthralling voice, featured on display in my most popular song, an R&B joint titled, “I Love You For You.” I’m proud of my story-telling ability in my songs; being able to craft catchy and enjoyable tunes, whilst telling tantalizing stories. But if I had to specify one thing I most proud of, is my toughness and inability to be slowed down no matter what. I just shot a music video recently after having foot surgery not even a week prior to it. On crutches! One thing that sets me apart from others is my authenticity. I never paint a false narrative in my songs that I wouldn’t live out myself, and don’t try to take advantage of other subcultures that I’ve never related to (ex. gang activity, street life, etc.)

Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
I’m dropping my debut EP, “Conflicts and Confessions”, Nov. 28th, and the leading single off of it “Know” on Nov. 13th. I’m also an aspiring journalist and photographer. I publish my work under my label, YESBYBABA, which I also distribute my music through. The label is set to spotlight rising artists in the Houston area, as well as push my own creative works.
