Hidden Gems: Meet Jason Hyman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Hyman.

Hi Jason, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Plainly put, I’m a real estate professional with a passion for community and economic development. I got licensed as a real estate agent back in 2017 as a way to bring in additional income and keep the student loan reaper off my back. Starting with HCC, I made my way around Houston’s universities, walking away from the University of Houston Downtown and Texas Southern University with a bachelor’s in business and masters in urban planning. Since then I’ve had the opportunity serve as a portfolio management officer with Bank of America and financial analyst for the City of Houston’s Housing & Community Development Department (HCDD). In both roles, I was tasked with protecting millions of dollars worth of investments.

During my time with HCDD I was able to streamline some programs and create processes which produced 219 single-family homes, assisted 283 homebuyers with down payment assistance, and created 1100 affordable housing rental units across 13 apartment complexes. My next adventure with Bank of America didn’t allow me to work directly with real estate, but I did learn some major lessons about money and business. Eventually, I was on a team with a loan portfolio of $387 million generating $25 million in annual revenue. Fast forward to 2017 and I realized that I wasn’t utilizing my full potential so I left my comfy job and took a leap. I was tired of being around so much money but not being able to help my own community. I figured, “What do I have to lose? Can’t win watching from the sideline.” So I took everything I learned and packaged it up to offer to everyone I meet. This is how I help, and it feels good.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. There is so much you don’t think about when starting a journey like this. The politics, competitive relationships, and family dynamics challenge you everyday. Working in the real estate brokerage industry is highly competitive in a city like Houston and it takes a lot to stand out. Our biggest challenge starting out was helping people understand what urban planning is, how it sets us apart, and how they can best use us.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
We are a real estate firm offering brokerage and planning services. Our mission is to bridge the generational wealth gap through real estate, one relationship at a time. Our office is based in Third Ward Houston, TX. The team is comprised of professionals with over 40 years of experience in residential and commercial real estate sales and development. We differentiate ourselves by being stewards of the communities we do business in. All of our agents and partners are local and provide a high level of contextual insight that is unrivaled by technology and outside competition. Our approach to real estate is comprehensive. Clients trust our vision to be transformative rather than transactional.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
There are two lessons I feel I have to mention. First, let go of perfection and start where you are. No one sees your vision more clearly than you. It’s important early on to gain support and the only way to do that is to put your vision out there and start building. The last thing you want is to see someone else living your dream while you are still fine-tuning. Second, I have to remember to share. I often forget how valuable the information I’m privileged to have is to the development of the communities I serve. I have to make sure to be intentional about sharing news and information at every given opportunity rather than just when I’m dealing with transactions, contracts, and clients.
