Meet Crystal Phengsiaroun of Tru You Fit in Galleria

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Phengsiaroun.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
My love for activity started as a child with my time spent playing outside and staying active with biking, playgrounds, and swimming pools. I found physical activity to be a pleasurable escape. I’ve always enjoyed indoor and outdoor sports. I joined a recreational gym here and there participating in basketball, badminton, and weightlifting. I also enjoyed a dance with watching music videos on T.V, movies and going out partying at a young age. Being active has helped me grow as a stronger person and stay out of trouble living in an area full of adversity.

I later ran a fitness club in college teaching fun tips on how to stay active with nutrition and training then I became a trainer and a group instructor. After training at Mousel’s Mixed Martial Arts Academy, I decided to participate in Nationals for Muay Thai at the TBA sanctioning 2012, 2013, and 2014.

I became a member of the Thai Boxing Association of America as a level 2 student and soon to be an Apprentice Kru.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
One of my most recent struggles is my double hip surgery from a generic condition called hip dysplasia.

I had a choice to live with a lame hip or take a chance at a surgery to crack my pelvis and nail it together in a shape that’s efficient to live with so I can comfortably sit, stand, walk, and run for normal periods of time. I had to do both surgeries separately which was 8 hrs. each under anesthesia, 5 days at the hospital, a blood transfusion for one, being a walker for a month, and crutches for a few months more, learning how to use my motor unit in my hips and thigh, and gaining feeling back. The experience was very humbling learning how to use my lower body again from scratch. Today will be a year from the second hip and November will be 1 year and a half. I am almost at 100% and plan on coming back stronger then I was before. I want to use this experience to share with the world and myself perseverance.

Tru You Fit – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I offer life-changing services in the form of fitness and health training. It’s provided in a one-on-one training so I can really focus on the specific needs of the person I’m working with.

I specialize in personal training and group training in weight loss, sports performance, and general health. I’m known for offering a fun, motivating and exciting session that’s really targeted to my client’s goals.

I’m most proud of my experience in sharing my passion for fitness to help others do more than reaching their physical goals but in addition, retain it and desire to train on their own for longevity being mindful of training injury free.

I add an extra twist to my training by incorporating some boxing and Muay Thai. My clients really love the variety as well as the stress relief that comes from hitting the pads.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I define success from learning from failures and coming back to correct it. More so, being efficient and positive from the mistakes made. Overall, perseverance through the journey of reaching a specific goal is the key to success.

The markers of criteria for success I look out for is the effective change through challengs. By challenging my clients, they will see changes in their mentality, focus, physique, and performance. By taking small steps, they never get overwhelmed and the changes happen naturally as opposed to being forced. There are many ways to track this. It might be a change in pant size or measurements from a fitness assessment. Other changes aren’t as easily tracked. If a client says they’re feeling better and are happier, then I know I’m doing my job.
