Today we’d like to introduce you to Selfcare.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
The vision for SelfCare. began in March of 2020 with a few conversations between sisters about what we each wanted to accomplish in our careers and the hope to build a legacy for the generations to come. Keep in mind these conversations took place during early quarantine when many of the stores that sell Black hair care products were closed and the items you can’t find in mainstream department stores were unavailable to us. One late night turned into the early morning and on the first of April 2020, we began creating a space where both Black men and women could feel at home while shopping for the products they use on a day-to-day basis. What originated as an idea to launch a beauty supply store quickly turned into Selfcare. a retail store offering life’s essentials, including hair care products, clothing, home essentials, and much more for both men and women. Since then, we’ve opened a storefront at 1314 N. Loop East Fwy in-between The Heights Houston and Independence Heights.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Deciding to open a physical location during the Covid-19 pandemic definitely has not been the easiest, as many customers are still fearful of shopping in person. The safety of our customers is our top priority and while offering them a new way to shop for their personal care and lifestyle essentials has been our number one priority. We’ve had to close a few times while airing on the side of caution for our customers and their safety. However, the level of support and love we’ve seen from our core family and friends has been phenomenal. Even with all the uncertainty, the last year has presented, we remain in agreement it was necessary to open in 2020. So, to answer your question, no, it hasn’t been a smooth road but, it’s business and rarely anything is smooth in the business of retail (pandemic or not). Nevertheless, since our Grand Opening and hosting our first bi-annual Selfcare. Sunday event, we are beginning to see an increase in online and in-store traffic. The start of 2021 has undoubtedly been looking up for us, we look forward to our future patrons visiting freely and with confidence as we broaden our product offerings and services. It definitely helps now that businesses are allowed to open at full capacity, and while we will still be exercising under Covid-19 safety protocols, disinfecting after visits, and requiring masks be worn while shopping, we’re anxious about returning to normalcy. If we can make it through a pandemic, we definitely will make it under normal conditions.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Selfcare.?
Selfcare. is personal care and lifestyle retailer located off 610 Loop in The Heights/Independence Heights area. At 1314 N Loop Fwy East Houston, TX 77009. We offer an array of products that span personal care, men’s grooming, hair care, home furnishings and soon, we will offer salon services to the public. More importantly, Selfcare. is a family-owned company comprised of three sisters Ashley White, Ki’Ara, and J. Addison. Reminiscent of our upbringing in Northeast Houston, our individual passions are housed under one roof. We each have our own niche from Home Furnishings, Hair/Personal Care to Fashion. The ultimate goal of Selfcare. is to provide a space where black men and women can be themselves while buying quality products that allow them to showcase the authentic beauty they possess. We sincerely believe that we have the power to heal ourselves. We believe that so much that we decided to expand our own product offering and create a Selfcare. skin and body collection under the direction of our very own KI’Ara Addison.
What sets Selfcare. apart from other retailers and buyer markets is our dedication to sourcing quality products, we strive to assure shoppers that the products we provide work and strengthen their abilities to live beautiful lives. Before offering a product in-store, that product is tested and evaluated. One of the things we are most proud of is not just offering a product because of its popularity, and that’s especially true when it comes to hair care products. As many of us now grasp, most beauty supply stores that saturate our neighborhoods are full of products that in recent years we’ve discovered were not adequate. At Selfcare. we want to provide men and women with product knowledge and quality under one roof. Shop with us and experience the difference.
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
We all define self-care in different ways and, there is no prescribed way to express self-love. The greatest lesson we’ve learned from the Covid-19 Crisis is that more now than ever, self-care is of the utmost importance. At the center of those lessons is the actualization of community and the familial bonds a crisis can create. We are all survivors of something, a deadly plague, war on racism, a summer full of unrest and not to mention a political climate unlike any we’ve seen for almost six decades. While the uneasiness of the Covid-19 Crisis and Texas Winter storm has brought on many stressors, it has allowed Selfcare. to be creative in serving the needs of the community from hosting in-store License to Carry courses, Yoga sessions on Selfcare. Sundays and upcoming events specifically for men. Whether virtual or in-person, self-care is necessary and looks different for all of us. Our holy grail is to make our customers’ lives more fulfilled, balanced, and at peace than before they entered.
