Today we’d like to introduce you to Bree Walker.
Hi Bree, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
After graduating from Dillard University in New Orleans in 2019 with a BA in psychology, I decided to come home to continue my passion. I founded a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that’s mission is to spread awareness of mental health and its importance in the Black community. Being that I have a history of potential undiagnosed mental disorders in my family, I feel that it’s important to provide resources that are not given to my community. (The Black community) Black people are not given the space to strive, instead only to survive. With the knowledge of mental health, I feel that our community will awaken to our true divine capabilities to fulfill more greatness rooted from self-love.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. There is a lot involved in starting/maintaining a nonprofit. I feel that all organization/businesses need a secure and dependable team. Being that mental health is a sensitive topic and there’s much needed to be done, I am in the process of solidifying a team of driven and like-minded creators. I have hope that with keeping God first, the organization and its purpose will manifest into something great for the Black community.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am currently a kindergarten teacher on the southwest side of Houston, TX. I am also obtaining my Master’s in teaching. With that said, I work with children see the effects of potentially traumatic home life on their mental health. That is what sparked passion behind providing mental health resources to the community. My goal is to provide education and resources that are visible in our community so that when my students are older, there will be less of a stigma surrounding mental health than there is now. If any.
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
I am an extreme Prince fan! I watch his movies (Under the Cherry Moon and Purple Rain) monthly. I have multiple prince shirts and apparel. It is a pretty obnoxious obsession. I am a sucker for instruments and high notes. It is a thrill through art.
