Today we’d like to introduce you to Derhiava Gibson.
Hi Derhiava, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I graduated from Prairie View A&M University in 2018. I became a mom in 2019. I had been trying to find a career that was fitting for a first-time mom. I started working in the social work field. As anyone working in this field knows, It was pretty stressful. So, I had to find a way to relax and unwind. I would light candles and just sit in silence.
After spending so much on candles from various companies I knew I needed to switch things up. One day, I was really looking at the candles I was buying and basically said to myself, “I could probably make my own candles. “I tried it one day and I absolutely love it. I love it more than just lighting them and relaxing. It is like therapy making them. As I continued, I decided I could make this my own business and thats what I did. I wanted to make beautiful scents that were affordable to all. I wanted to make candles big enough for the price as well. As I continued to play with candles, I also started playing with body care. The creativity that comes with this line of work is what ignites my passion. Everything I produce is homemade and made with love. I do not have a storefront however, all my products can be purchased at www.4evascentz.com. I have many shipping options on my site. The most popular is my ” Local Delivery ” option. This option is $4. Anyone in the Houston and surrounding areas up to 75 miles from my business will qualify for this option.
Basically, with local delivery your package will be delivered by 4eva Scentz directly so there is no long waiting period or other concerns you often have with other delivery options such as UPS, USPS, etc. Often times I do sell out of candles, however, I do my best to hurry and restock those items gone. We can be reached on our social media Instagram or Facebook @Eva Scentz or you can email us at 4evascentz@gmil.com if you ever have questions about our products, restocks, or etc.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
As any business, it is anything but smooth. I often find myself battling my son and my career along with my business. It is all about making time for all three. By day, I am a school teacher. By night I am the 4Eva Scentz CEO. However all the time, I am a mother to my son Carter. Over the last year, there has been many obstacles. This is my first year teaching and it was in the middle of a pandemic. That speaks for its self. Lots of late hours trying to figure out how to do my job effectively and proficiently. Then, my son was diagnosed with Autism and that definitely threw me in a loop as it would any other parent. So I had to find him all kinds of resources and learn about Autism because I had never had to actually deal with it before. You hear about these kinds of things but you never expect to be the one to go through them. I feel like all of my Obstacles have just given me a little bit more strength and courage. That saying you never know how strong you are until you have to be… That been my life this whole past year.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I have a Criminal Justice Degree. However, I am a 1st-grade school teacher. I have always wanted to be a lawyer since grade school. However, I have had to put it on hold to deal with my son. My goal is that once he’s in grade school, I will be able to go to law school.
I am most proud of myself honestly, I have endured a lot over time and I still find a way and a will to continue. It is so easy to give up, throw in the towel and quit. But my drive and my will fight all my fights for me. I am proud of my son. His progress is admirable. He has always been happy go lucky. When I feel like I can’t go on anymore, I look into that face and I become like the “Incredible HulkWoman.” I want him to see hard works pays off and not to quit because things have gotten hard but that it only means it’s time to go into overdrive !!
