Rising Stars: Meet Lashon Brown Jr.

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lashon Brown Jr.

Hi Lashon, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started ministry/artistry in 2016 in a young gospel group called “JMJ”. People often called us the Christian Fugees because the group consisted of me, my sister, and my God brother (lol). But soon, God began to call us all in different directions. For me, he still seemed to call me to music. I soon began to cover some of my favorite worship songs and put them online. Before I knew it, they started going viral, and people would begin to book me to sing and minister those very songs. And this definitely pushed me into my solo artist career. Some of these bookings allowed me to sing in front of some amazing people I look up to, such as Jonathan McReynolds, Kierra Sheard, Tye Tribbett, Todd Dulaney, and Deitrick Haddon just to name a few. And I know the list will continue to grow as I continue down this path God has me on.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t, I’m a PK (Preachers Kid). And from birth, I pretty much had to be an example to others because all eyes were on me. But no one knew that as I was helping others, for years, I was struggling with a pornography addiction. It seemed to get worse the more I tried to hide and bury what was going on. In moments of helping others, I needed help. I often would ask myself, “how can I minister to people if I’m struggling myself”. So I remember literally devoting to God I’ll change and not just sing, but live what I sing. But soon one night, I remember being in my room and the temptation to watch porn was strong, and in a weak moment I gave in. I felt bad, depressed, defeated, and mad that I let God down, and I allowed condemnation to set in. But then God reminded me of the scripture Romans 8:1, which says “ So now there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ Jesus”. And in that moment, I literally felt God’s love cover me, and I began to write this song called “Change Me”. The chorus of this song says, “I need you to change me, rearrange me, I can’t do it by myself”. This literally has become the foundation of my ministry./artistry. I released the song “Change” in 2018, and it since has impact many around the world. God literally took one of my weakest moments and birthed something amazing that brings him glory. And since I’ve vowed to be a voice and vessel he can use for his glory.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well, I’m a singer, songwriter, musician. I absolutely love music. I know for a fact I was called, and that’s why I take it so serious! I think I’m known for my love for God and how I let people know you can still be cool and love God. Many have a viewpoint that being saved is boring, and I’ve come to change that. What I feel sets me apart from others is my sound. I feel my sound can’t be boxed in, I’m literally trying to create my own lane. Now, of course, I have inspiration, but I refuse to be a copycat of someone. With that always in mind, this journey has been fun as I learn my sound more and more. I literally may do a soft worship song and then the next is a worship song with an 808. I like keeping people on their toes, but one thing that will always be consistent through my music is the power of God. And that’s what I’m most proud of. I love how my music has literally been changing and impacting people’s lives. You just never know who needs what you have to offer.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Well, I don’t like saying the word luck, I say purpose. I really don’t believe in luck and I don’t think nothing is by coincidence. We all have a purpose and call, and we’re all here for a reason. I know blessings, doors, good luck as people say, is attached to purpose. This is why I’m always telling people find your purpose. Purpose attracts the connections, money, etc…
